I don't know if it really counts as a hobby, but I like to collect product packaging that's designed well.

Now a days I use 2FA everywhere i can, encrypt my computer and use VPN and i still don't feel totally secure.
Privacy/Security would be a nice tilde to have.

Seconded. Possibly as a subtilde(?) of ~tech, but preferably not, as privacy and security cover much more ground than just technology.

Privacy and security are both broad concepts. Technology can be used to ensure them or violate them, but they are not confined to the realm of technology.

Put two people together and you have privacy and security issues. What am I willing to divulge in conversation? Can they keep my confidence? Can I trust them? Am I willing to keep their confidence? Are we being observed? Do they present a physical threat? Do I wish them harm?

Hope that sheds some light on things :)

I agree that privacy applies in areas other than that of technology, but in the modern era privacy is affected by far the most by tech. You could make the argument that small-scale security includes such topics as keeping secrets from friends, I suppose, but I find it unlikely that that would be even a fraction of the discussion in such a community. Just look at r/privacy: it's basically a subdivision of r/technology on a website that doesn't even have subdivisions.

There's a difference between theoretical use and practical use, and I just don't see anyone ever using ~privacy to discuss whether or not they should trust their neighbor.

In my mind this is more of a privacy than a security issue. Privacy can be about control: what do I tell, to whom, when, why, etc. It's all about what you make public or keep private, which part of yourself you choose to expose. Though it can of course also or exclusively be about security, depending on the context.

/r/privacy is a good example of how the tech-heavy approach excludes groups and certain aspects of privacy that could or should be discussed in the sub.

Take the #metoo movement for example. Some of the discussions I've seen surrounding that subject were about the integrity of your own body and intimacy (privacy) and of course personal security. None of it was discussed in /r/privacy as far as I know.

Privacy is more about the people using technology than it is about technology, imo. Making it a subgroup of ~tech puts the focus on the wrong part.

Using your metoo example, that doesn't fit into privacy in any sense of the word. That would make much more sense to me as a division of ~talk, as it's about coming out about past abuse and being willing to talk about it.

I actually like your use of the word "intimacy", as I think that itself could be a subgroup. Intimacy and privacy are to me two very different ideas with the same motivations behind them, intimacy being privacy on an individual scale. Perhaps ~talk.intimacy and ~tech.privacy? I feel mixing the individual and large-scale models of this feeling wouldn't be a good match, so having them separated is in my eyes a good idea.

Why would you choose Telegram for security? By default all conversations are stored in plain text on their servers, if one of them is compromised then they'll have access to all your messages. Their encryption standard is homemade and hasn't had proper security evaluation, its impossible to say whether it's really secure or not.

Last of all it really gives me a feeling of too good to be true. They blow the competition away, offer plenty of server space for sending files, constant updates and yet they have no plans for any funding outside of the donations of one Russian billionaire. The same Russian billionaire who made VK, the Russian equivalent to Facebook, which was later seized by the Government.

So many red flags come from the app it just seems unnecessary to use it when there are legitimate alternatives like Wire and Signal.

I was very confused. Then intrigued. Then confused again. Now I'm just wondering how long that took. Did you automate it somehow or go through it manually? That seems like a borderline impossible workload. Seems like the novelty would wear off long before completion.

What's your explanation to your friends? And is there something you get out of it that they might not understand beyond that?

Basically I wrote a custom program (inspired by this) that when given a video and subtitle track can do something called forced alignment that roughly puts timestamps to words. It's not perfect however, and I do indeed have to go through every word and make sure it's the actual word being said.

As for the why? ... I have no idea :) I like to think it's along the lines of high effort, low quality shitposting along the lines of this guy playing this jazz lick for 5 hours (and his explanation in this Q&A)

Dang, that was fantastic. I loved his explanations, not just about the jazz lick but especially when he talks about embarrassment as a catalyst for growth. Something that's been on my mind lately. And hearing a bit of Satie makes me want to clear off my keyboard and play some gnossienes.

The concept of high effort shitposting tickles me now. Mainly because I like the idea of excessive repetition as practice. It has a different set of rewards than typical "do it til it's right". "Do it til it consumes your consciousness and keep going until your consciousness breaks free and the process becomes a part of you and reveals aspects of its nature you hadn't previously considered."

It really bothers me that in an alphabetically list, some of the "know"s are very clearly "no" given the context.

It is pretty fun. Even with the technician license (which can be attained with a week or two of studying) you can get on the 2 and 6 meter bands. Depending on where you live you can hit some local repeaters and contact others all over your general area.

I've got a cheap little BaoFeng UV-5R which has been pretty fine.

I live in Colorado and my favorite thing to do is SOTA activations. Essentially you hike to specified points in the mountains and try to make contact with another radio user. https://sota.org.uk/

When the International Space Station flies overhead they send out a digital transmission that you can receive and record, then convert it to an image. I've been meaning to try that out sometime. Here's a youtube channel pertaining to that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7to9uX1sWC4

There's a ton of different applications and niches to radio technology that I have yet to delve into, but it's a very deep hobby that you can get into without much effort or expense.

My grandfather used to be a HAM operator until he got dementia and just didn't have the mental capacity to do it anymore. He was talking to guys all over the world, often the same ones for YEARS with the same old radio equipment he started with in the 60s/70s.

Does HAM relate at all to any of what you do? Or are they pretty much completely different worlds. I really wish now I had at least one piece of my Grampa's radio tech. It's all in the good hands of other HAM operators now though from what I've heard.

I love collecting cell phones. New, old, ancient, it doesn't matter. Most people are not really fazed by it, they are just "interested" when I pull out my drawer and they spot 2 or 3 loose phones just rattling around.

Every now and then, I'll go on a cell phone "cleanse" where I swap my sim from my real phone (whatever the top-end flagship is at the time) and try out something older like a BlackBerry Classic or Galaxy Note 2. I also like to make small repairs and modifications to my phones like swapping the batteries, screens, or housings.

It's an extremely common hobby, but I rarely bring it up because the vast majority of people I talk to think of any and all collectible figures as being toys for children and judge you for "spending your money on toys". It's such a weird hangup, I collect a lot of stuff, why do you think my Blu-ray steelbook collection is cool, but also think my action figure display makes me a child?

I know people who ride motorcycles, but most of them ride sportbikes that are quite uncomfortable for long trips, and they can't fathom an 8+ hour day in the saddle, much less a week straight of such days.
