However, the person who made it also made a bunch of other things, and I spent all day today on their website: https://neal.fun Everything is worth checking out for at least a few minutes, and I really got a laugh out of the absurd trolly problems; 'infinite crafting' is the most entertaining for sure.

We talked about it a bit after I made this post, and while it didn't go perfectly, it was a generally positive conversation. My spouse listened, and almost immediately tried to do some of the things that I suggested, like exercise, meditate, and schedule an extra meeting with their therapist (they meet about once a month right now).

Whether this translates to long-term healing, I guess we'll have to find out.

In feeling frustrated and discouraged right now. My spouse is going through a tough time at work, and has been for the last few months. Unfortunately, they've really been externalizing their feelings, blaming the situation and holding on to anger rather than taking responsibility for their reactions. It's been getting more and more stressful; they're not able to be supportive, and react with anger to almost anything remotely negative. They generally tend towards fairness and rational, calm discussion before this situation, so this feels very different.

I'm going to try to explain how I'm feeling today, and how their behavior is affecting our family. I'm hoping they can take it to heart.

The work situation is going to be resolved one way or another this month.

I had a chance many many years ago to visit the Uffizi art museum in Florence, Italy, with a study abroad program. Absolutely gorgeous, so many historic pieces, and an incredible building. I liked it so much I went back independently later when the group had a free weekend.

Edited to add: shout-out to the Milwaukee Art Museum, which is the most interesting building I've ever seen, and the MOMA, which had Dwarf Fortress "on display" when I visited.

I'll add a vote for Janome HD3000. I found one (new unused) returned and on the clearance section in JoAnn's for $400. It's excellent, can do all the stitches I need, easy to use, and built to last.

Not who you replied to, but we've also aggressively cut out almost all advertising. We have a media server and sail the high seas for movies and TV; sometimes we watch PBS Kids which has a "sponsored by" message sometimes but never for toys. Kiddo is six (first grade) so no unsupervised access to YouTube/internet at home, and ad blockers when we watch a video together. We pay for Spotify to avoid the ads.

The only ads I'm personally exposed to most days are sponsorship messages in YouTube or podcasts, and that one road in town with all the billboards. It's absolutely lovely.

I use journals in a few different ways. Historically, in a "dear diary" way, when I was younger and full of hormones that needed to be heard. For a little while I tried out something I titled my "wins journal," attempting to inject some gratitude and positivity, and list out a few items every day. Recently I've been reading some non-fiction that has prompted a few introspective journaling sessions that were somewhat guided by the book itself. I've also started "ADHD journaling," where I have a single page in my book dedicated to a month. I number the lines for the days of the month, and add a few check boxes in columns for any goals/daily activities that I think I might try to accomplish. Then sometimes I fill out any significant events for the day, and check any boxes where I met the goal. The facing page I've been using for some longer term patterns, or just whatever. If I don't fill it in for a few days, it's fine. If I feel like it, I can long-form journal too, but no biggie if I don't.

For example, the entry today will look something like this:

    • 3 Th Zoo all day. Convinced 6-year-old to eat half plate of food she doesn't like. [ ] Drink water (lots) [โœ“] Walk 7k steps [ ] Bed b4 11:30

It ends up capturing a lot of info in a small amount of space and time. We'll see if my tendency to quit after the novelty wears off happens to this too.

Hi friends. I just got my phone connectivity back after two days knocked out, and I came over here to see what the Internet says about this mess.

I'm in western North Carolina, in a fairly populated area, near a downtown. I've heard that a few towns near here were completely wiped out, flooded or by landslide. We're relatively lucky; no flooding or injuries, just found all the leaky spots in the roof. A tree fell across our road, took out the power pole and clipped the porch. No power (for the neighborhood and everyone I've talked to), and water was out most of the day yesterday. The town says not to drink it yet. We're doing fine, trying to cook as much of our fresh/frozen food as possible before it goes bad. A generous neighbor is sharing his propane burner. Schools are closed indefinitely. Guesstimates around here for electricity coming back are in the realm of weeks. I'm considering leaving to visit family for refuge.

It's rough. We are simultaneously bored and stressed out. Send comic books and fresh veggies.

    Puzzle games:

    • The Talos Principle (1+2)
    • The Witness (personally, I didn't like this game but tons of peeps do)
    • Cocoon (short, I found the boss battles annoying but the puzzle mechanics were great.)
    • Return of the Obra Dinn (murder mystery +scify+fantasy: some frozen in time black and white gore; no jump scares)
    • Baba Is You
    • Myst, and its sequels
    • Superliminal (this is an amazing game, can't recommend it enough. You liked The Stanley Parable? Oh yes.)
    • A monster's expedition
    • World of Goo (less world, more puzzle)
    • Fez (the world IS the puzzle; also there are puzzles)
    • The Magic Circle

    Action/RPG:

    • Assassin's Creed games (clearly only if they pass parental inspection. Personally I loved the AC2 Ezio trilogy, but they may feel dated now. Odyssey and Origins were both absolutely beautiful and the open world was fun.)
    • Life is Strange (who knows how well this works with back seating, or how the moral decisions/consequences/themes would work with an 8-year-old. Content warning: a character jumps off a roof in front of you unless you've said exactly the right things. There's other violence too, but it's been too long for me to remember. It's pretty dark, and often there's no right answer.)

If I think of more, I'll edit and add them.

But the worst pain was a herniated disc giving me sciatica for months. No painkillers would touch it. It was Purposeless, Constant, and had no predictable end. Waking up from surgery was like angels singing. No more pain!

We (my spouse, really) have kept a vehicle beehive for a few years. I like to recommend Honeybee Democracy, about the mechanisms that a hive uses to make major decisions. It's written in accessible language (with pictures! And graphs!) by a PhD summarizing years of his research. It's mostly about how the hive splits and relocates, including some of the author's tests and methodology. Absolutely fascinating.

I'm going to add a vote for Agricola, a euro worker placement game where you are each managing a family trying to make it through the seasons and gather enough resources to grow your farm and feed your family. It is well-balanced as a two-player game, and even has a one-player solo campaign mode that I've really enjoyed. The rules are a little more complicated than most games we reach for (I think the box says 12yo and up?). The meeples are adorable.
