I thought this video/letter beautifully expressed the feeling one gets from looking at "artwork" that comes out of generative AI models (and what a combo of Stephen Fry reading a letter from Nick Cave <3 ). Even if you didn't at first know that it was AI generated, once you find out it becomes immediately degraded. The human creative struggle is an essential part in giving meaning and value to an artwork that generative AI will never truly replace.

I find myself noticing AI generated images on articles or video thumbnails and immediately thinking lesser of the creative value of whatever content is behind it. Almost associating it directly with spam content. If they put so little effort in creating the image is the rest really worth my time?

Thanks for sharing this OP. What a story and emotional ride!

It’s such a well written piece and it’s fascinating to read from the perspective of an experienced doctor and patient.

It also reminded me of the excellent show ‘This Is Going To Hurt’ which everyone should check out if they haven’t already.

I have also had similar impressions among myself and my multilingual friends, of having an almost different personality in our other languages. I remember a friend telling me once “you know I’m a much funnier person in German”.

Perhaps humour is a good example of this being about the language and not culture as every language seems to have their own kinds of humour perhaps as jokes are often about playing with language.

Germans for example are stereotypically said to lack a sense of humour but their humour is just very different as they have a very precise language and jokes that involve double entendres or playing with words do not work so well.

I agree with you also about indigenous languages needing to be supported. Apart from ways of thinking, languages are also, in a sense, wells of accumulated knowledge and experience, especially about living in the landscapes in which they developed.

It’s really sad to think about all the knowledge and experience lost with the many indigenous languages that have gone extinct or become endangered. Im thinking about Australia in particular where the situation is really dire as languages are going extinct faster than they can be documented.

If you are ever in Italy again or you can find it where you live, the Pecorino from Sardegna called Fiore Sardo is amazing and one of favourite Pecorino cheeses.

There are some other great ones as well. Like Canestratto which is formed in reed baskets (canestro) or another favourite, Formaggio di Fossa, which is aged in a pit in the ground and has a very sharp taste.

Pecorino cheeses are very diverse and all of them tasty :P

You really need to have it fresh though. Once it’s refrigerated the consistency and taste changes completely.

With a side of prosciutto and some crusty bread it is heaven for me.

It would be nice to see the research proposal if it’s been published.

If you ever make it to Pompeii there is cool restaurant nearby called ‘Caupona’ which has been made to resemble an ancient eating establishment of the period with beautiful frescoed walls and even a part of the restaurant where you have to dress up to look the part. I have yet to go myself but the food is inspired by ancient recipes and looks like the chef is really talented.

Similar in saltiness to soy sauce and perhaps the aroma you would expect from dried fish or anchovies with a strong savoury umami flavour. Used sparingly in a soup or sauce the fish aroma kind of fades away and you are left with a nice umami kick.
In Italy there is also something similar still made called ‘colatura di alici’ and it’s great to add to sauces or even on it’s own for a very simple pasta but you have to be careful to use it sparingly as it’s very very salty.

I really enjoy a lot of the podcasts put out by the BBC.

One of my favourites Is The Life Scientific which interviews a scientist each episode covering their life and what motivated them to become scientists as well as an in depth discussion of their research. The interviewer Jim Al-Khalili is a professor himself and an excellent interviewer. Every episode is quality and you’re guaranteed to learn something new.

The other one that I enjoy a lot is From Our Own Correspondents. A podcast which presents short audio essay/documentary contributions from BBC reporters and foreign correspondents around the world, reporting about events or stories from their lives or encounters. Often topical to current events but not always.

Empire (goalhanger podcasts) has been a great podcast so far.

I have been working through the first season on British India and the history is presented in a really engaging way.

The hosts are also very knowledgeable having written books on the subject, and have great chemistry/personality.
