I've been curious about this for a while now. I'll start:

The Philippines has a fair number of weebs. It helps that the local networks have been reshowing shows like Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece, etc since forever. We even have vehicles called jeeps that have murals painted- it's unsurprising to see an anime character or two there.

Of course you still get people who think animation is lame, those are never gonna disappear. But it's not hard to find someone who is familiar with a classic show or two (high chance it'll be One Piece).

I avoided vtubers for a long while because, from an outside perspective, it's nothing but horny weebs that unironically need help. It doesn't help that trending events that reach outside ears are often things like "vtuber got cancelled because she has a crush on someone irl!!". I don't fault anyone for having wrong assumptions.

I think Holomyth's debut changed my mind, the vtuber sphere can be surprisingly chill. Though these days I only watch clips because I'm too busy, and I also find myself leaning more unto Holostars.

So while I would only talk about this with friends, I wouldn't outright say it in public.

What did you think of the live action Death Note (not the Netflix one)? They did change a lot of things, especially in terms of how L ended.

I also love how it gives more spotlight to the side characters we never see. And despite it's premise, the series is actually wholesome.

So I definitely think it's just a different situation for everyone. There are people who would be embarrassed if their friends/family knew they were watching anime in general, which does indeed make any anime a "guilty pleasure"

In general, Studio Ghibli films were a lot of people's introduction to anime. If you want an easy start and don't want to be overwhelmed, Ghibli is a safe bet. From observations, here are the most popular starters:

    • Spirited Away
    • Princess Mononoke
    • My Neighbor Totoro
    • Ponyo

And from the other comments, I second Cowboy Bebop! I hope you find one you like, but it's fine if you still can't get into it. Best of luck!

I have a buddy who has loved SAO since its first season. He knows it kinda sucks, but it makes him happy and imo that's great.

It would be Detective Conan for me. The quality these days is horrible, but I get a kick from watching them anyway- even though you can predict the culprit 00000.1 seconds into the episode.

And I know this is ~anime, but I'd also like to see ones that aren't limited to anime. Let us know!

It's Pokemon Fire Red for me, but imo it has the same essence. Many people hate Kanto because it's Game Freak's favorite child, but you can't deny it's unbelievably cozy. The simplicity of the story and mechanics make it relaxing.

I think this is also the reason why I didn't mind Pokemon Let's Go. It's a weird game due to the catching mechanics, but the 3D Kanto actually looks nice- I dare say it looks great compared to the newer regions.

I remember getting White and Black 2 because I liked Zekrom a whole lot as a kid. Well, I still do.

The amount post-game content in B2W2 is insane. Up until now, there has been no pokemon game that could beat the number of random things you can do in the post-game. Though, it doesn't help that it's been dwindling for every game released.

It's a shame that B2W2 didn't sell well, despite BW selling decently. A lot of complaints from the first game were fixed and improved.

I think I did too, my friends as well. The human world had so much potential for our fav dorks to explore.

But aside from the show, the crew also deserves praise. They were so close with the community, even the ending's designs were based on fan requests! But I love them the most for not backing down on their word- they still retained their LGBTQ+ representation despite the cancellation. Instead, they doubled down in the opening itself (trying to not spoil as much as I can, sorry)!

Though note that the last season was unfortunately rushed due to Disney's cancellation over a queer main character. The ending is still enjoyable nonetheless.
