Something I’ve been trying for the last year or so, which seems to work well: crystal deodorant. It is actually a type of salt. It doesn’t stop sweating (like antiperspirant) but the salt kills off the bacteria that grows in the sweat, so it stops the smell of body odor.

My hair is straight and thickish. Most of the of the last decade my hair has been short but it is now just past my shoulders and feels clean and soft :)

Edit: I should also add that I’m male (in case that affects how hair grows?). And when I used to use shampoo, I thought my hair was greasy, so needed washing. But since I stopped, my hair does not really get greasy at all - whatever caused my scalp to produce oils adapted when I stopped stopping it away. So, I can highly recommend joining the no ‘poo movement, but it might require some transition time.

My recommendation is to reread the Lord of the Rings some time after reading the Silmarillion. There are so many references that you can’t pick up out of context. Understanding the connection to the deep history of Middle Earth makes reading the Lord of the Rings much more rewarding.

I think I’d put Ms Marvel third, for different reasons. Bottom 3 would be Secret Invasion, She Hulk and Falcon/Winter Soldier. (Latter wasn’t terrible, just meh.)

I think I agree. Wandavision showed the most creativity as well as making the best use of the episodic format. Loki was also well written and interesting. Do you (or anyone reading this thread)...

Do you (or anyone reading this thread) have an overall ranking of the TV shows? I think I have a top and bottom 3 but haven’t thought much about it…

This Eminem cover by Kasey Chambers, which I found shared in a comment in another music thread, is an amazing cover but builds really effectively over 8 minutes.

A book that I think meets your criteria is The Goblin Emperor, one of my absolute favourites of the last few years. At first glance it seems to be what you’re trying to avoid: there’s complicated made up names, elves and goblins, magic, medievalish world (early industrial, with a dash of steam punk, actually). However is it absolutely different in terms of tone, plot and character.

It turns out the elves and goblins are really just two versions of the same race (they intermarry) and there aren’t any other races at all - they are just the people of this world. The long fantasy names are a bit off putting at first but are a result of clearly thought out language which end up effectively adding to the world building. There are no wars or battles. Very little action. The main character is one who is intelligent but is slowly building confidence and progresses through the story by being kind.

“Kindness” is a key word when I think of this book and you just want to spend more time with this character and in this beautifully constructed world.

Highly recommended to any fantasy reader.

Post rock is definitely the genre for building up layers. Of all the bands in the genre I would recommend Sigur Ros as an good answer to the original question. e.g. Starálfur

I really enjoyed Tress. I think Brandon’s experiment with writing in a different style paid off. I know he is trying to find Hoid’s voice but I mean more than that - the more gentle, whimsical, fairytale style worked very well.

I am halfway through SP3 and it’s fine (the world is really interesting and the story is doing it’s job). I enjoyed the Frugal Wizard but it doesn’t stand out compared to his other works. I think Tress does stand out so it is a clear favourite of the secret project books so far.

Also, I’m glad that Cosmere readers are here on Tildes, since I’m not planning on checking Reddit any more either. If you are not either, you might have missed the announcement by the Sanderson mods that they are setting up a Lemmy instance as an alternative place for discussion.

If you don’t want to check Reddit for their updates on this, they also have a blog describing that that are doing.
