This is the usual trend, and people love it because it allows for deniability. But there's never really too much work, just too few mods. Mod are unpaid, all they have to do is be lightly vetted. If there's a system to report bad mods you don't have to worry too much, so there's no real cap on making them. Reddit also passes all new comments for a subreddit through one feed.
Unfortunately, they're echoing a trend that paid companies use. This is based on deniability with regards to bias. Lots of companies prefer to use algorithms for things like resume selection, because people falsely ascribe agency to the algorithms rather than the people who made them, allowing companies to be like, "we didn't ban you, the algorithms did" or even "ee weren't racist, we just used algorithms."

The world is dying.
This is the idea I disagree with, and that I think is too hyperbolic to be useful. After all, it presents a simple claim that, when refuted, could threaten to refute the movement to end climate change.
The earth's ecosystem has never had any kind of balance; it's always been a perpetually changing, never repeating tapestry. People have noticed negative feedback cycles which do tend to perpetuate certain situations for longer periods, but nature is full of positive feedback cycles too, where small causes set off larger changes.
What the earth is in the middle of now is a pretty large mass extinction event. This is absolutely something that we, as people who interact and use the earth's environment, should be terrified about. But it is not something that is new to the earth. There have been big temperature changes and mass extinctions before. This case is different... yes. Earth is always like that.
What is at stake, and which could motivate people more, is the very ecosystems that surround us. This is a persuasive argument especially since conservative folk often paradoxically live closer to nature. Your family will probably survive global warming; but what if the woods that you go hunting in don't?
The problem I have with the hyperdoom views of global warming is that if global warming doesn't produce enough horrible effects, people might begin to feel it's a non-issue. The wealthier half of the world that we live in will get more and more used to not seeing much of nature at all. People in the southern hemisphere will starve and boil. But people in the northern might just see our food quality slowly decreasing. Something happening slowly and with unclear risks that we will just shrug off.

It's not until you enter the big leagues that you have any safety net.
At least in the US, there is an idea that athletes have to get a normal education, but it's usually just a facade as far as I know. Teachers would get in trouble if they flunked star athletes, so the athletes are technically enrolled but don't necessarily attend their classes.
With a specialty sport like sumo, it's especially rough, I imagine. There's not going to be a lot of amateur sumo wrestlers, so there's not going to be a big sports market you can fit into.
All this though is, well, a problem of capitalism and something that could happen in lots of industries. There's small mending that could be done, like not allowing companies to ban social media access, but it's not substantially addressing the problem that most people are a few cases of bad luck away from poverty.

Make it similar to reddit, but with two axes. One is for agree and disagree, and the other is for contributes and doesn't contribute. The caveat will be that if you downvote on the agree/disagree axis, you can't vote on the contribute/doesn't contribute axis; it will be assumed that if you felt the need the disagree, there was a discussion. However, I think you could say "yeah, I agree, but that's off topic." So you could vote up on agree/disagree and down on contributes/off topic.
Reddit voting is largely for consensus building, but the problem is that it buries conflicting opinions. This gives us an easy way to say "yeah, that's right" or "no that's wrong" without also hiding conflicting opinions.
Ideally, people should explain why they disagree, or why they think that something doesn't contribute. But people won't do that most of the time.

In a simple example, if a very corrupt government secretly prints a ton of money and gives it to a crony, that won't lead to inflation if the crony is smart enough to not spend the money suddenly and all at once. If the exchange is entirely in secret there might not be any inflation at all.
We saw hyperinflation in Zimbabwe because the new funds were being used to pay for the military. I suspect in that case, Mugabe (or whoever else) knew that the loyalty of the military was paramount, and as inflation started to get out of control prioritized the relative wealth of the military.
The US is a highly centralized economy, by which I mean, controlled by a relatively small elite, so a large output of currency into the economy is going to be absorbed by people who likely have the sense not to cause runaway inflation.

I think they deliberately pretend to be ignorant of the general content on their site. But then again this has reached news levels, so you're right, that's when they are forced to comment.
