This is just my experience, but maybe it can help you in some way.

I lost my father 2 years ago. I'm in my 40's and it was tough. My father had a TIA (similar to a stroke, but not quite). That moment just reinforced my father's mortality and I flew out to help in any way I could for a week. I did yard work, I painted, I did anything I could regarding things he needed done at his house. I also did another very important thing. I referred to it as "no regrets". My father and I didn't get along until my 30's and I really wanted to forgive him for our tensions and lack of connection we had growing up. So, I talked to him and told him I forgave him and that he was a good dad. I knew his dad was tough on him and he did the best he could. And he reacted positively to it. We never talked emotionally our entire lives, and it was awkward and weird. But it really let me "let go" of things I held against him.

2 years later, he was diagnosed with cancer suddenly and everything was treatable. But then it wasn't. I had just gotten engaged around the diagnosis and was planning to marry 12 months from then. We ended up moving the wedding to 3 months from the proposal and my father passed 2 weeks after the wedding.

The take-away I hope to give you is the "no regrets". Talk about everything. Ask him anything. Talk to him. And if you can't talk, just be there. Be present. This really helped me process everything later. And even writing this whole story was hard to re-live it. But I learned that the best thing you can do is connect. Regret nothing. And enjoy being with them in the way you best can. I have no regrets and I feel like we talked about everything we needed to. Of course there are things I wish I could ask him now, but I at least know that I talked about the tough stuff and know that he knew our relationship and that I loved him before he passed.

Southern CA here, closer to San Diego. I've been getting a lot of emails from the power and Internet companies giving tips and possible outages. But other than that, I've moved all patio furniture into the garage which is about all I can really do. But usually with weather reports, stuff gets hyped up with STORM WATCH 2023!!!!1 and then it stays over the ocean.

And I'm not diminishing the threat at all. Just cautiously watching as the storm gets closer.

About 15 years ago, I lost about 70lbs. I've since gained 40 of it back and I am working to lose that again. I will say, that the older I get, the harder it is. And everyone's body is different. Anyway, I wanted to share what worked for me in the past and currently:

    Losing Weight:
    The South Beach Diet
This is just a snippet from the Mayo Clinic, but I recommend asking your doctor about it and really following this strictly. I lost weight fast (not always good) but with my doctor's input, it really helped a lot. The hardest part was the first 2 weeks with no sugar, breads, etc. Like, no fruit or bread and only lean proteins and veggies. It was rough. I failed twice before I hit my stride, so don't give up!

    Exercise:
The majority of my exercise was running. Free. Fresh air. And I was lucky to work near a park that I would spend about 30 minutes of my lunch every day running. At first, it was just shuffling along until my shins hurt. Then I would push myself to do a little more every week when I didn't feel the pain as much. And I would push and push and push until I was running 2+ miles a day.

Currently (15 years later) I still try to run 2-3 times a week and play a little pick up soccer once a week. But I will recommend another free thing to do in your own home. And that's:

MadFit. Seriously, I don't know how this is free (she has paid programs too), but during COVID and now, this was (and is) my go to when I can't run. And with the heat, if you have AC, this is worth it. I mean, my wife even uses this at her work in an air conditioned building she has access to.

    Tracking:
I use a Withings Smart Scale to track everything. Weigh yourself at the same time every day, but only look once a week or month to see a trend. You will have ups and downs all week, but you can see a trend with all of your weigh ins. Trust me. If you only weigh yourself once a week, you might catch an "up" day and think you are messing up. You aren't. There are fluctuations. It's normal.

    Food Tracking:
My Fitness Pal was my go to, but with privacy issues, it's hard to find a really good replacement. I currently use Cronometer but don't fully trust anyone. Regardless, you need to hold yourself accountable. Don't shame yourself. But, record yourself. It's hard to admit you f'ed up. But that's ok. We need to be people too. Not robots. But always strive to do your best. It took me a long time to not be anxious just thinking about recording my meals. Or shaming myself when I ate something bad. You got this!

Finally, here are some recopies that really make it easier:
    Skinny Taste

I subscribe to this through my RSS reader (just add /feed to the url) and there are planned meals for the week and just a lot of fun looking recopies. Not all are perfect, but there are so many to choose from. And all free.

I hope this helps someone out there, as all of this info changed my life for the better.

I felt the same as you when I had my Lexus. All bluetooth, and used a USB drive for all of my music on shuffle. Now that I have Android Auto, I can't imagine being without it. Navigation, music streaming etc. Some of my family has CarPlay and they feel the same. It was something I didn't know I wanted until I had it.

Right there with you. I really like the Bolt. But introducing a new ecosystem I can already imagine the monthly subscriptions (and other pay apps) they have planned to nickle and dime their customers. Software subscription models moving to car ownership (eg. Adobe)? Hard pass.

    100% agree with this.

And to add to it, the things I learned before finding my wife are:

    • you can't love another person until you love yourself
    • the movie Jerry Maguire is bullshit. "You complete me" should be "you enhance me"

I got married a lot later in life, and I would not change a thing about how I got here. Enjoy your life. Do you. Make yourself happy. You have no idea how attractive that is. Trust me.
