I bought one and got to play it for a couple of weeks before it tried to update itself, failed and got stuck in a loop. Now I can’t do anything with it. What bothers me is just how terrible support has been. It literally takes 3-4 week for them to reply to an email. And I had to email them, theres no chat function and no phone number listed. After the initial wait, I got a message with instructions and a couple of files to fix the issue, but it didn’t work; so I had to reply to the email with error code and now it’s been 2 weeks… I want to like this device but come on! Hire a couple of more people to man the support lines for gosh sake!

You are 100% entitled to do that and should strongly consider it. My long term partner and I are not legally married and have found ourselves in similar situations. For example, there’s an EV car rebate that phases out if your income is “too high” which is honestly kind of offensive given how high cost of living is in our city. For this reason, the car was bought and registered under her name. We both pay for it, but on paper it’s hers.

I’ll admit that I don’t know everything on the issue, but when we looked into it, it sounded like the big ones are:

    • estate issues, advanced directive and power of attorney, which can be worked out with legal documents regardless of marriage.
    • We are able to join each others health plans without marriage. That would have been a biggie as well.
    • Our home and mortgage is under both our names
    • Tax wise we’re actually better off filling single then jointly.

Am I missing anything significant? Would you mind sharing your experience?

We’re in the same boat. Been with my partner for 10+ years and we call each other husband and wife but don’t actually have a certificate. We aren’t religious and never felt the need to have a wedding, it also felt like it would be stressful and more for others’ benefit than ours. My view on it is that it’s more special that we are together because we want to and not because we feel like we have to. In that spirit, I echo what you said about separate finances. Money can be the source of so much stress in a relationship; but by keeping things separate it just isn’t a source of conflict for us. We both work, make our money and spend as we see fit. We have joint expenses that we divide based on what we can afford to contribute. My partner had higher income while I was finishing school and paid a larger share, now my income is higher so I pay the larger share and I’m happy to do it. If we have a large purchase (like a car) we both contribute.

It’s funny. I lost trust in NPR but not for the reasons mentioned. What I’ve noticed over the years has been a tilt toward corporate friendly coverage. There was an “interview” with Charles Koch by Kai Rissdal which felt like a gush fest with softball after softball. Granted this was during the “marketplace” show, but you could have been forgiven for thinking this was CNBC and not NPR. Along these times, Bernie Sanders was picking up steam in his presidential bid, and I noticed frequent attempts to dampen, distort or just ignore his successes. Something that may have been expected on right leaning outlets, but not supposedly granola eating tree hugging “NPR”. Over time, the socially conscientious coverage weakened and was replaced by cookie cutter stories covering “both sides” (especially maddening with Trump, climate change deniers, vaccine skeptics and other fringe groups). There were also too many “feel good / human interest” pieces that further diluted and cheapened the experience .

The only time I made use of that option on Reddit was when “r/thedonald” was taking over the main page and cluttering everything with their inflammatory rhetoric. The community and moderation on tildes have felt completely different. Is there a toxic group of users on here that I’m unaware of?

It’s been on my list of things to watch for a long time and I’m not sure why I waited on it for so long. It’s basically a thriller / mystery but the the character development is outstanding. Even standalone “one off” episodes are very memorable. I’m 14 episodes in and am hopeful it’ll stick the landing.

However I was hoping the mod would allow for the camera to be controlled with the mouse; it sounds like you have to manually type the commands into the console; hopefully another mod will make it more user friendly.

I’ve been playing Xenogears on the steam deck. It is a squaresoft rpg from the ps1 era. I played it on original hardware when I was a teenager and always wanted to replay it but felt like it was too long of a commitment. Well, enter the steam deck with emulation that I can pause at any time (and take advantage of save states). I’m about 10 hrs in and it’s been very enjoyable. There are full motion video (anime) cutscenes that aged well. Although the battles are fun and challenging, the randomness of the encounters is annoying. The 2D sprints in a 3D polygon world looks surprisingly good still. The camera is controls are dated, just allowing you to rotate 90 degrees; sometimes it is difficult to find where to go. The menus feel sluggish.
This is a game that could use a QoL update. Even with the downsides, I just really love battling with the giant mechs, they nailed the sense of scale both when fighting and exploring.

One thing that wasn’t obvious to me was how important money is in Balatro. The problem with skipping blinds is that you lose out on multiple payouts, interest and buying stuff at the shop. Once you have a good income it has a way of compounding, which in turn lets you buy more cards and booster packs, allowing you to strengthen your cards.

I also leanded that there’s a tier to card bonuses and multipliers, generally it goes points > + multipliers > X multipliers. It also matters how you arrange the jokers, you want to have the X multipliers all the way to the right so they get activated last.

Last it’s important to keep in mind you aren’t playing poker after the first couple of rounds. Things get topsy turvy and you can easily get to a place where a pair or three of a kind can beat “better hands”. You don’t know what the strategy will be at the get go, but as you build your deck, it’ll become apparent how you should be playing.

There are so many other small tips and tricks that aren’t explained, and you have to either learn by doing or watching some YouTube videos (which I initially avoided).

I’m in the US so things may be a little different from Canada.

    1. Yes, you should probably sell a car that is close to 10 years or 100k miles especially if isnt a well maintained dependable vehicle (ie. Honda Civic).

    2. Selling you a private party gets you more money but is more of a hassle. You can get a sense of the cars value using online tools like Kelley blue book. If you chose to do a trade in, make sure to negotiate the price of the “new” car separately from the trade in. You’ll need an idea of what each is worth and will have to get avoid the confounding tactics the dealers use to wear you down.

    3. There’s a “middle ground” between trade in and private party, which is the larger used car companies like CarMax and Carvanna. It has all of the convenience and usually pays a little more than a straight trade in to a dealership. They also help by giving you an estimated value you can work with. And you can also chose to just sell the car to them (and buy from someone else).

    4. I haven’t sold private party in a long time, but I’d imagine there are a lot of scams out there akin to a seller paying with a check that will bounce (or a check that is larger than your asking and having you send back the difference via wire transfer). Be skeptical of anything that feels odd.

    5. Always meet in person, ask for ID (take a picture) and make the transfer at a bank with the teller. Sign a bill of sale and the pink slip (title), make sure you mail out the sale portion of the title to the DMV to remove custody of the vehicle within 7 days. Remove the car from your insurance.

I largely agree with you, driving pattern probably has a larger impact than the braking method itself. One point of clarification though.

It doesn't result in additional tire wear because it doesn't result in additional deceleration.

The regenerative braking for sure results in additional deceleration compared to an ICE car “coasting” to a stop without braking. It’s noticeable and I personally like it, as it allows for 1 pedal driving.

If you take it to an extreme and slam the brakes, I can imagine it wearing down the tires more as it skids to a stop. If you don’t brake at all, the tires just slowly keep rolling until friction brings the car to a stop. If you have regenerative braking (which kicks in immediately when not accelerating) then it’s somewhere in the middle.

I suppose the other question is compared to what? If you drive an ICE car with both feet on the pedals and are constantly accelerating and braking then you’ll use up the tires faster than if you gently coast to a stop and use minimal braking.

Agreed that there’s no reason, but EVs have instant torque and you get used to it real quick. The regenerative braking also adds to the jerkiness to some extent. If you’re the one driving you won’t notice, but passengers certainly will. Tesla has “chill mode” which is helpful in evening out acceleration.
