I love Grapes of Wrath for the same reasons. The characters, the environment, everything is described so well. Haven't read East of Eden, definitely going to check it out.

That sounds like it would be good to help me sleep as well, thanks for the suggestion.

What jazz would you recommend? To be honest I've only really listened to Ornette Coleman.

Ratatat is an awesome suggestion, thanks! I like different music for different types of books, guess I'll have to experiment by reading books and listening, bummer.

I can't listen to anything with vocals while reading, but something instrumental at a low volume just works for me.

I use the same reality checks (counting fingers, breathing through a squeezed nose) and they have been really effective for me.

As far as your sub conscious limiting your control, myself and a few others think that if you don't truly believe that you can make the change in your dream that you want it just won't happen.

Your last part reminded me of some kind of semi lucid sleep paralysis.

    Just my armchair opinion.

If you're having trouble with dream recall the only thing I can think of to help would be keeping a dream journal and writing whatever you remember as soon as you wake up.

It can be a long process but eventually your dreams will stay in your mind longer after waking.

That's just been my experience, your milage may vary.

I've had two dreams where I knew I was dreaming and was able to control certain parts of it. I'm working on getting better at it, keeping a dream journal helps.

I really think the best thing we can do is continue with good content, civil discourse and just being decent to each other.

Unfortunately as more people join I think we'll find people trying to make tildes something it isn't.

The majority of people I've interacted with here are capable of making a reply to a user that what they said is inappropriate in a non aggressive way.

Call me optimistic, but I think it might work for a while.

Then when more new users join and they see the tone of discussion they'll either participate or see that it's not the place they want to be.
