I use the same reality checks (counting fingers, breathing through a squeezed nose) and they have been really effective for me.
As far as your sub conscious limiting your control, myself and a few others think that if you don't truly believe that you can make the change in your dream that you want it just won't happen.
Your last part reminded me of some kind of semi lucid sleep paralysis.
Just my armchair opinion.

It can be a long process but eventually your dreams will stay in your mind longer after waking.
That's just been my experience, your milage may vary.

lobster I've had two dreams where I knew I was dreaming and was able to control certain parts of it. I'm working on getting better at it, keeping a dream journal helps.I've had two dreams where I knew I was dreaming and was able to control certain parts of it.

I'm fascinated by it and just wondered if anyone else has experimented with it.

What music do you listen to while reading?
What do you like to listen to while you're reading? Lately I've been listening to Explosions in the Sky, El Ten Eleven and Bonobo. I'm open to pretty much any genre, anyone have any suggestions?

Unfortunately as more people join I think we'll find people trying to make tildes something it isn't.
The majority of people I've interacted with here are capable of making a reply to a user that what they said is inappropriate in a non aggressive way.
Call me optimistic, but I think it might work for a while.
Then when more new users join and they see the tone of discussion they'll either participate or see that it's not the place they want to be.
Looks great, thanks!
