QKSMS is pretty great, switched to it from Textra and I'm perfectly happy.

Isn't twitter killing third party clients?

DNS66 is a non-root alternative as well, however it can't be used in conjunction with a VPN because it uses the VPN API itself. There is a Github issue discussing a workaround that would allow other VPN's to function, but I don't know if it'll get anywhere. It might work with WireGuard if it's not running in userland mode, though.

Nextcloud is another good app and a great alternative to Google Drive, if you're comfortable with hosting your own instance of it.

Currently an iOS user, but from my short time on an old android:

    • Orbot and Orfox, Tor apps by the Guardian Project.
    • Redreader, Slide, and Diode, three FOSS reddit clients.
    • Cache Cleaner. On a really slow (think Android ICS) device, freeing up space is super important.
    • AfWall and netguard, for dealing with pesky spyware.
