I'm surprised nobody mentioned AdAway yet. It needs root access, but it's a fantastic hosts manager. DNS66 is a non-root alternative as well, however it can't be used in conjunction with a VPN...

DNS66 is a non-root alternative as well, however it can't be used in conjunction with a VPN because it uses the VPN API itself. There is a Github issue discussing a workaround that would allow other VPN's to function, but I don't know if it'll get anywhere. It might work with WireGuard if it's not running in userland mode, though.
Nextcloud is another good app and a great alternative to Google Drive, if you're comfortable with hosting your own instance of it.

Cache Cleaner. On a really slow (think Android ICS) device, freeing up space is super important.
AfWall and netguard, for dealing with pesky spyware.
Simple Gallery, since stock android doesn't really have a nice lightweight one.
