What site is that? I use shazam regularly to identify random songs that are playing when I am out and about...I really wish it worked for TV shows, movies, etc. It doesn't seem like a crazy thing...

I like abstract art quite a lot, and I have for a long time. I know a lot of people who do not, and that's fine. What I don't really understand is people who say they don't like art but do like music. I understand this primarily as a criticism of abstract art, in particular. I think they may be closing off a form of experience they already accept in music. Music does not need to be representational to be moving, or interesting, or beautiful. I think visual art can work the same way.

I'm not particularly educated when it comes to art. When I view art I judge it based on how it makes me feel. If I enjoy looking at it, great. If not, I move on. Things that make me enjoy looking at something include colors, shapes, blends, textures, lines, edges, materials, etc. It can be realistic or not. It's not necessary for visuals to be concrete. Visuals can provoke emotions and thoughts. They can be complex or minimal and be interesting or not. My own internal reaction is all that is required for me to enjoy art.

Some abstract artists have indicated a desire to make art more accessible by emphasizing the visual experience over academic analysis. Even when deeper meaning is available if I don't enjoy looking at it, it's not for me. Picasso's paintings don't appeal to me, for example.

I was in NYC at a museum a few years ago and they had sketches of people and animals and architecture by Jackson Pollock on display. They were amazing, and very realistic representations. You might look at his drip paintings and think there's nothing there but a bunch of paint splattered all over the place but he was clearly a highly skilled artist. I think he knew what he was doing.
