So, here's an old mystery I've been pondering for almost fifteen years. This is a local news broadcast in 2011 where due to either a hijacking or studio mixup it began playing audio from some old movie or TV show. The sound cuts out at the 3:02 mark, at which point the channel was silent for about a full minute.
It's probably something horror or sci-fi adjacent since it sounds like a monster attack. The music and sound effects make me think it's an older movie, maybe 80s or 90s, it just has this campy quality to it that we don't get much anymore. There's some sort of zapping sound effect that feels particularly retro to me. (Side note, I've always thought that bit at the end was people cheering and celebrating a successful hijacking. It may be the monster howling though.)
I posted this to TipOfMyTongue on Reddit years ago but it didn't get any traction. I'm really curious if anyone can identify it!
I found it! It's a movie called The Pumpkin Karver (2006) and the audio from your YT video starts around the 52 min mark. I don't want to paste the sketchy site I had to use to find the movie but...

I used a site that extracts an mp3 from a YT URL then used AI to transcribe and search for any potential matches.

I may need to watch it around Halloween just so I can see that scene in context. Partially because I'm curious what the heck kind of lightning powers this pumpkin carver inexplicably has. Saw a few reviews single that out as particularly weird.
Does make me continue to wonder whether it was some sort of audio mixup in the studio or a hijacking. The fact it was a direct-to-video slasher film makes it feel less likely it was an in-studio accident. My mom mentioned thinking there was a news story the next day about it happening to multiple local affiliates, but I can't find any such news story.

And to dig a little deeper in what could have possibly happened in your case.. I found a site that shows what was playing on the Syfy channel and the Pumpkin Karver was on at 5pm est on October 1st as part of their 31 Days Of Halloween. I also found a news article to what was actually on the TV dated September 30th which likely could have been repeating the following day. I'm guessing then it might have been some kind of audio cross feed or routing mistake. Very cool that you were able to get it recorded so fast and makes me wonder how often this used to happen. I do love the audio hijacking theory though!

I think I latched onto hijacking as the main theory because A) I had a bit of a fascination with hijacking incidents after learning about the Max Headroom hijacking, and B) the end of the audio made me think it was someone cheering and celebrating a job well done. I only recently learned about how TV signals could interfere and have weird issues, particularly on local channels.
Also, fun story about the VHS tape! Gotta love how screwy technology can be sometimes, especially the older stuff. Wonder what sort of audio it had by the time you stopped using it... And what sort of weird audio mismatches other VHS tapes may havr.

Well, I know we recorded Christmas videos over some Star Trek Voyager episodes and there's one point where there's a scene of Janeway in her ready room (I can't remember which episode it was) glitching in over Christmas festivities but the audio is just pretty generic dialogue like "Mr Tuvok, what is the status of..." as the video cuts to opening presents.
I'm sure there's lots of little fun glitches all over the place like that as basically everybody re-recorded over VHS tapes.
What site is that? I use shazam regularly to identify random songs that are playing when I am out and about...I really wish it worked for TV shows, movies, etc. It doesn't seem like a crazy thing...
