Agreed. I read and enjoyed the books, but I have a hard time imagining this translated into a TV show.

Agreed. I’m Canadian and the idea of wearing shoes in your house is so strange to me.

I would call myself a “rail fan” instead of a “railfan” as I am not part of any community online, but I come from a city with a very poor transit system and I just returned home from London. The Underground is really a work of art. I didn’t realize there were online communities about this, although I suppose it’s obvious in retrospect. I’m excited to see what comes out of this post.

I worked as an auditor in Canada for a while, cheques (at least until 2021 or so when I stopped) were still very common in the small/medium sized business world. I work with some Europeans now who have only heard of cheques in the same context as "bill of exchange", as a historical process that hasn't existed in a really long time.

I feel like it will be hard to attract the critical mass of people though that reddit does. Reddit has had such an interesting dynamic. It's various communities attract so many different types of people - for cooking, videos, tech, etc, who also happen to live in cities/regions. I don't think I'd go on a website just for $place since I don't have much in common with $place-ians, but I'm happy to talk with them on reddit.
