I don't want to derail a topic, but what I found most noteworthy about the video was that I was actually less excited when I saw "from the creators of Game of Thrones" flash on the screen. Hopefully by "the creators" they mean the money-men or executive production staff, and not D&D.

While looking through discussions about it, I did see people saying that the Chinese show was good, so I think I’ll give that a try instead.

Ah, that is unfortunate. The silver lining perhaps is that D&D did a pretty great job with game of thrones for as long as they had creative source material to pull from. They only truly dropped the ball when they had to start making stuff up on their own. So, perhaps, if they stick to the script, they'll pull off another winner.

There may be some reason to hope here. D&D actually do have chops, because they did a good job adapting the early GoT seasons. It only fell flat after it ran out of source material, and the scuttlebut is they were burned as fuck on the project anyway, didn't want to do it anymore. HBO should have swapped showrunners, that's where the true failure is.

Now D&D have a stunningly bad reputation. If they want to change that, this is their only real shot at it. I bet that they are quite motivated to succeed.

I agree with you that D&D catch more flack than they deserve. In my opinion, the greater share of the blame lies with George R R Martin.

Like you said, D&D were hired to adapt the source material to television, but in the eight years the series ran, GRRM only released two novels in the series -- and one of those novels was released during season 1! So for essentially 7 years, Martin published nothing for D&D to adapt. D&D's roles transformed from adapting the series to writing it.

Moreover, we know that Martin shared with D&D the ending to his series (as well as the general arc). So if the ending seemed half-baked, that's probably because it was -- it's been over a decade since the last entry in A Song of Ice and Fire, and Martin still hasn't figured out how to advance the plot.

I hope it is as at least as good as the Chinese show. There are parts that are drawn out and some corniness but some of it is just so damn good. All the Red Coast Base parts I thought were gold. You could tell there was a desire to tiptoe around the line of censorship they faced concerning the Cultural Revolution parts, especially the father. The guy who played the detective was perfectly spot on. I see him when I think of that character now.

I’m glad it seems this Netflix series isn’t willing to leave out that the integral character of the series has some serious reservations about humanity itself after the way her father was treated. The Chinese show waters that part down pretty heavily.

That would truly be a tragedy if that happens. While I liked The Three by Body Problem, I felt that I only became really interested once I started The Dark Forest.

Agreed! It's been a while since I read the trilogy but I wasn't particularly blown away by the first book. The Dark Forest is where it really gets good. I liked Death's End too but it gets really far out and esoteric towards the end. Personally I enjoyed the strangeness, just not sure it would translate well to the screen.

Honestly the only memorable thing for me that happened in 3BP involved some carbon nanotubes and the Panama Canal. I think a TV series could sum up the whole book in two episodes, with one dedicated to that part. Then dive right into TDF in earnest starting with episode 3. I'm sure I'm forgetting some important stuff that would make me reconsider, but off the top of my head that's what I'd do with it.

Such an irritating conundrum, isn’t it. If nobody watches it guarantees cancellation, but it’s so disappointing to not get closure.

I recommend the books if you like scifi, but be warned it is written by a non-western author and so the pacing and style of it will feel unfamiliar and likely confusing. If you know that going in I think it helps, I wasn't warned and it got a bit rough (motivation-wise) for me. By the end it pays off though.

I believe they do exist, though I haven't tested it out yet. I'll try it out here:

          𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫
          Reference: https://docs.tildes.net/instructions/text-formatting

          Expandable sections

You can create an expandable (and collapsible) section of text by placing all the content you want to be expandable inside a <details> tag. This will have a default label ("Details" in Firefox), but you can set your own label by including a <summary> tag inside, containing the label you want to use. For example:

          <details>
<summary>Click to view the hidden text</summary>

          Here's all the hidden text.

It can have **markdown** in it too.
          </details>

          Which will produce:

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭

          Here's all the hidden text.

It can have markdown in it too.

(Note that if you want to use markdown inside the hidden text, you must leave a blank line after the line!)

The section will be collapsed by default, but if you want it to start out expanded, replace the initial <details> with <details open>.

          After testing:

          • Don't need spoiler summary / formatting? Ignore the above.
          • Just type <details> Your Text Here </details>
          • If all text after is a spoiler, you can leave it as <details> Your Text Here

I enjoyed this "comedic video about the experience [of reading the series]", but probably makes more sense if you've already read the books.

Not sure if I like 3BP or Project Hail Mary better. Maybe they're just both top of the line in their own way, 3BP more analytical and PHM more hands-on down-to-earth. Not sure if I'm conveying that right.

The Expanse, I would say is one small step below, but has the advantage of already being a series for anyone who's more of a, shall we say, tv person, here in ~tv.

The Remembrance of Earth's Past series is such a grand sci-fi story. One of the things I really love about science fiction is when a story not only entertains me with an interesting plot but also forces me think about implications beyond the pages. This one had me reconsidering our place in the universe.

Adapting such a story to film is an ambitious project. What we see in the teaser looks promising. I'm eager to see how it turns out.

Granted it does a very good job of stepping through why some of these things make sense, but there's other parts that are just "ok so that's science magic, got it".

I wouldn't be shocked if they only do the first book as well. The budget alone for the later ones would be very high, and the material has even less appeal to the average person.
