Decided to give Lies of P a go (despite not really being interested in the whole 'steampunk Pinocchio' idea at all) and it is really good. Definitely more forgiving than other Souls-likes, but the combat is fun and the levels are well designed. The boss designs are awesome too, I already know I'll want another play though just to see some of them again.

As it was free on Epic I've been playing Snakebird too - I like a good puzzle game and this one has some great puzzle design in it. It's been a fun one to play with my son too.

My Dad had a BBC Micro so the first games I played were on that. The 2 I remember most are:

    Repton - http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=266
You move through a maze clearing a path as you go. If you go under something it will fall. Eggs crack releasing monsters (which chase you). Falling rocks kill you or the monsters if you can lure them under. Passwords were animal names. I could spell chameleon at a young age because of this - I think it was only the password for the 2nd level!

    Chuckie Egg - https://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=25
I could get through the main levels (8?) comfortably, but then the big bird would be released out of the cage and chase you around which I found pretty scary when I was little!

    Does anyone else remember these?

Oh man I loved Satisfactory so might have to look this up. Not sure if I have time for a time sink game to get obsessed over at the moment though.

    Happy Christmas everyone!

I've played Strange Horticulture over the last week. I was interested in it largely due to the Lake District setting as I spend a fair bit of time around there. You run a plant shop. Customers come on and ask for a specific plant. You have a book with some clues to help identify them. You are constantly getting new plants and new pages and it is up to you to label the plants you've identified. You have a map, and occasionally get clues for where to get new plants (although the screen never leaves your plant shop, I've you don't actually get to explore anywhere else). There is also an underlying spooky plot going on but I don't want to spoil anything!

It is short (about 5 hours) but I loved all of it. A nice change of pace, and it feels like it was made for the Steam Deck (which I played it on).
On top of that I finished my replay of Batman Arkham Origins. Some of it was really fun, some of it was pretty frustrating. I don't feel the need to go back and finish the side quests (I did them all back when it was first out anyway).

I've been replaying Christmas Batman (Arkham Origins) due to its festive setting. I started loving it, wondering why it is always sidelined as the 'not good' one in the series. However, I'm now a fair bit into it and getting frustrated. The balancing seems off compared to the other games. Every combat encounter seems to have at least one guy with a gun which is just a pain, along with the shields, martial artists, guys with knives, etc. It is so long since I've played asylum and city - did they overcomplicate this one with different enemy types? The shock gloves are also ridiculous and I can see why they didn't come back in Knight.

I have some good news for you - Minor spoiler You can choose a second archetype! I can't remember how much you need to play to unlock it but I don't think it was too far into the game.

I've just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany. I first read it about 10 years ago and I've been craving a re-read for a while now. I don't want to spoil anything, but I love the progression through the story split into those smaller anecdotes which inevitably end up having some greater meaning. There are parts of it that I could do without (and IMO make it feel a bit padded) but on the whole it is a book I love.

I just rewatched Another State of Mind last weekend (documenting their tour with Youth Brigade in a knackered old school bus), definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Went to 2 very different gigs last Sunday and Monday which has influenced a lot of what I've listened to this week.

Sunday was Lindisfarne, who have been going for half a century and the remaining members still put on a great show. I grew up listening to them as they were a favourite of my dads.

Monday was The Dirty Nil - fun poppy punk. Small gig but they still gave it their all, clearly have a lot of fun doing their thing!

Althought I usually have water with me too so I carry a lot of liquid weight around when I'm out and about.

I also like live music and venues near me have got some great alcohol free beers in but they're just as expensive as the regular beers!

I'm meant to be training for a half marathon in Sept, and struggling to keep to my training plan. I find it super hard to be motivated to force myself out in the evenings, but have found getting up a bit earlier in the morning and getting out before work is better. But now the runs are each 4 mile+ thats getting tricky too.

I started playing squash about 3 years ago with no real experience in any racket sports and I LOVE it, and usually play once or twice a week. I think having a court booked and a friend to meet works wonders for sticking to it (compared to my running struggles!)

Valheim - I play this with a few friends every Sunday night. It's mostly been a lot of fun, but I'm finding the Mistlands super grindy to the point we'll probably be looking for a new game to play soon.

Guacamelee 2 - me and my son had a lot of fun playing through the first one, and the second is currently free on Epic. So far it's more of the same, but we're enjoying it.
