I got the GOG version running on my Steam Deck via proton. It was a bit tricky, but @3WolfMoon's comment helped me out.
The performance seems to be pretty poor, at least on the main menu, so it may be simpler to simply play the Steam version of the Gold Edition.
Nonetheless, here are the steps:
Installation instructions for playing the GOG version on Steam using Proton
- Download the offline installer from GOG
- Launch steam
- Select "Games" > "Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library..."
Browse for the GOG installer - Add the installer
- Right click on your new game
- Select "Properties"
- Navigate to "Compatibility"
- Select "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool"
- Choose a Proton version such as "Proton 9.0-4"
- Select play on the installer
- Go through the menus to install the game then exit
- Find the game's path, which should look something like:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/The Last Express/
where<app_id>
is the appropriate folder for your game (hint: check the most recently created folder in~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/
) - Open
dosboxTLE.conf
from the game's folder, and changeoutput=overlay
tooutput=opengl
- Add the following to the end of the
dosboxTLE.conf
file, replacing<app_id>
where appropriate:
[autoexec] mount c "/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c" mount d "/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/The Last Express/data" -t cdrom C: cd GOGGAM~1\THELAS~1 EXPRESS.exe exit
- Return to the "Properties" menu for the game
- Update "Target" to point to the
DOSBox.exe
file, replacing<app_id>
where appropriate:
"/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/The Last Express/DOSBOX/DOSBox.exe"
- Update "Start In" to point to the game's folder, replacing
<app_id>
where appropriate:
"/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/The Last Express/"
- Update "Launch Options", replacing
<app_id>
where appropriate:
-conf "/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<app_id>/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/The Last Express/dosboxTLE.conf"
- Select "Play" and enjoy!
Note: I found it easier to mount the game's folder as the C drive rather the
drive_c
due to issues with the game's folder name being too long for thecd
command.Optionally, you can add custom art to the game's entry by downloading images from SteamGridDB.

We have a really interesting slate of games. I'm looking forward to The Last Express and The Secret of Monkey Island in particular. The former looks really unique, and the latter is so influential that it's time I give it a go. The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls also looks great. I had never heard of it, but I love a good Game Boy game.
I'm sad Resident Evil was eliminated, but I'll probably play it alongside Chrono Trigger in October and re-nominate it in the future after making myself even more familiar with the game.

However, it does seem like a pretty odd choice for an entire month, and I don't see much depth to a discussion around playing it besides strategy and variations of the game.

You should have seen me playing RE7 in VR. Now that was a terrifying experience! 10/10 would do again.

I just wrote a comment about Resident Evil for people that don't like horror. It's the game that totally changed my mind on the genre. It's not that scary in my opinion, and playing during the daytime always helps. That being said, I totally understand if it's a game people want to avoid. But I think it's worth giving a chance!

Resident Evil changed my life for the better. I used to despise horror and was too terrified to touch it. I didn't understand why people enjoyed it. Then one day I picked up Resident Evil REmake while dealing with a difficult breakup, and I was consumed. The genius of limiting saves behind consumable items blew me away. Add to that limited ammo! This game makes you think through all of your actions and understands how to execute on fun gameplay. The overall sense of dread it invokes is amazing. The cinematic moments throughout the game as new enemies are introduced are also impressive. Something clicked while I was playing the game that made me realize I love horror. I would have never known! By the time I finished the game, it got me out of the funk from my breakup.
It would be a shame not to play it during October. REmake is one of the greatest remakes ever, and the game itself deserves recognition in the discussion of greatest games of all time. I think anyone who is weary of horror should give it a chance. There's a reason that Resident Evil has become such a major franchise despite belonging to a genre many refuse to touch. Once you fall in love with this game, there's an entire world of more Resident Evil games as well as other amazing horror games to explore. I hope it invokes a similar love for the horror genre in others as it did for me!

I sold about $10,000 in Tesla stock, so I would have a car to make it to my internship, which turned into a full time job offer that only paid $50,000 with a masters degree and a CPA license. Learned a good lesson about making money! Anyway, I strongly dislike driving and sold the car to my dad, so it's still around. Now I don't have a car and use the savings to buy index funds.

For me, the most unifying concept is if I can play the game on my CRT, and that ultimately comes down to one shared (but not always present) trait: 240p. However, I’d still put the Dreamcast as retro based on gut feeling.
My general rule of thumb is if a MiSTer FPGA has a core for the console, then it’s retro. I think after that, graphics, memory, and CPUs made a large leap that redefined how games were made. I view the N64 and PSX as bridge consoles. The GameCube and PS2 are on the other side. Perhaps I’ll need a new name for that generation. Emulation gaming? Where it’s more worthwhile to fully emulate the console rather than write an FPGA core because the systems are so complex.

No corresponding release on PC when the game was released. Not all of those are essential, but they all take some form for what feels retro to me.
A system where I can download games from an online shop such as the Xbox 360 and Xbox One will never feel retro to me. Whereas the SNES, PSX, and GBA all feel retro to me. GameCube is sort of the last system that feels retro to me, which is funny because I’ve been using a GameCube controller via a Wii U adapter everyday on my Nintendo switch 2.

Finally got around to playing some last week. I'm really enjoying this game. It has me absolutely hooked! The dosbox version with the CRT emulator is proving to be a great choice.
I began my journey by reading the introduction and history and characters chapters of the official strategy guide. I was impressed by the quality of the write up about the climate leading up to WWI. They clearly put effort into that.
Last week, I got all the way to Vienna in one sitting. Things were fairly straightforward for the most part until I got to the concert section.
Spoilers for Chapter 4: Munich to Vienna
I quickly realized I was acquiring the brief case of gold in an incorrect manner by exchanging the Firebird for it, but I couldn't figure what I was doing incorrectly. I kept poking around the train and thought there must be something in Anna Wolff's compartment that I was missing, but I couldn't find it for the life of me. I opened the strategy guide and discovered that I had completely missed that you could pear below her jewelry box. Once I did that and obtained the master key, things went back to being smooth sailing.
I placed the Firebird in the dog's kennel after I realized leaving it in your room leads to it disappearing. Although I realized after the chapter ended that I can now lock my room with the key, so maybe that would work too.
During the week, I did Chapter 5: Vienna to Budapest. Today, I'm starting Chapter 6.
Edit: Finished the game. I'll save my thoughts for the next thread, but I really enjoyed it!
