I have a Viofo A129 and while it’s decent for the price, I have my complaints. I have found it locked up and requiring a hard power reset (it’s hot wired so rarely loses power) on multiple occasions. Most recently I discovered it had been locked up for about 2 weeks - not something you want to discover after getting in to a situation where you need it.

Somewhat in this vein, Oh No, Ross and Carrie was my favorite podcast, which has sadly come to an end, but the catalog remains. Two science minded people trying out pseudoscience, religions, and cults to see what they’re actually like. They joined both Mormonism and Scientology! But there’s over a decade of great content.

I liked Magic Tavern but I liked Improvised Star Trek (also ended) even more. Featuring Matt Young (Usidore) from Magic Tavern, plus many Tavern guests. Far less produced and I think hardly anyone listened, but great fun for Trek fans and tons of great bits that still plague my speech to this day.

There is a large crossover of BTB fans with Knowledge Fight, a podcast debunking and deconstructing Alex Jones, so if you like one you’ll probably like the other. Host Dan selects clips from the show and plays them to his buddy Jordan and they mutually rip it to shreds. It’s funny and infuriating and Dan has an academic ability to strike at the core of Jones’ hipocrisy and an incredible memory to provide the evidentiary base, while Jordan expresses the outrage we all feel toward Jones while also adding a lot of salient insights.

LED bulbs are only possible thanks to the invention of the blue LED, which is actually a fascinating story. Red and green were quite simple and around for years, but despite considerable effort, no one was able to come up with a process for blue. So it was always simulated with a filter and therefore severely limited the efficiency and practicality of LED white light. A single engineer basically made it his life’s mission to create a true blue LED, and he eventually suceeded, setting off the LED revolution of the past decade.

Veritasium did a great video about it.

I am playing through Final Fantasy: Pixel Remaster and am wrapping up FF5 at the moment. I was a little apprehensive because FF1 was long the only Final Fantasy I had ever played, and it is one of my favorite games of all time (no doubt due to the many long nights playing it on NES in my youth). I tried FF7 a couple years ago but just didn’t like how it felt so on the rails in comparison. Also not a fan of ATB. So I wasn’t sure how FF2-6 would compare to my beloved FF1.

But I gotta say, I am liking them all, and each one seems to get better than the last. FF5 can be a bit much with all the multiclassing options and not always knowing how to spec characters out, but it’s proving to be a lot of fun.

My biggest mistake: I unintentionally 100%ed FF1’s Steam achievements because I know it well enough that I know where everything is. After that I was like “oh let’s just do it for all of them” not realizing that FF1 is the only game in the series without missable content and each game has progressively more missable content, so making sure I don’t miss anything has taken a bit of fun out of it. But other than that, having a great time.

    I still hate ATB though.

I really loved this game and I was super excited for Cities: Skylines 2, cue my disappointment to learn that it ended up being unplayable on all but the heaviest of gaming rigs. What a shame.

The “stuff’s broken, how do I fix it” experience is also worse with macOS IMO.

With macOS you’re going to get either Apple Support Forum posts with 1000 people with the same issue, no official solution, and lots of “reset these settings, clear this, reinstall that” that randomly work for some people but not others. Or you’ll get a spammy clickbait article that has most of the same “reset settings” steps. Half the time nothing ends up working but the problem will just go away at some point.

With Linux you’ll get a bunch of more technical discussions on Q&A sites or distro forums which may be harder for less savvy users to follow, but also offer real troubleshooting steps because unlike macOS there is probably a log somewhere that explains the problem, if you can figure out where to look and how to decipher it. Forum convos are often a back and forth of “look here” then “look there.”

I have a 10 year old dumb TV that has been great but the backlight failed on it last year. I did some bench testing and narrowed it down to the LED strips, which requires removing the actual screen from its support, something I wasn’t confident I could do without breaking the screen. Ultimately I found an electronics repair guy working out of his garage and he did the repair for me for around $300.

In the meantime I had taken a look at the market and yep, your only options are absolute garbage quality from the in-house Walmart brand or digital signage for thousands of dollars. Literally no reasonably priced decent quality consumer options whatsoever.

I’ll take my dumb TV to the grave with me.

I don’t know about the sustained unrest and protests. I thought that Trump supporters would engage in ongoing violence if he lost the election in 2020. January 6 happened, and maybe the aftermath deflated their will to act, but this is a sizable group of unhinged people with violent fantasies who believe 100% that the election was stolen and they haven’t done much of anything in the 3 years since.

I do think there will be a loud and angry response from those opposed to Trump if he wins and there is credible evidence of theft, but I expect it to be more of a Women’s March kind of thing. Massive groups of people showing up to a one day protest on a weekend to voice their displeasure, and then they go home.

The rest of it (increased authoritarianism, attacks on marginalized people, corruption, division) all seems likely, though.

This is my "shrinking web" theory. The number of sites on the web has grown enormously, but overwhelmingly they are all spam. Meanwhile, all of the actual, real, useful content has been consolidated into smaller and smaller handfuls of sites that are increasingly walled and moderated. It's a vast difference from the web of 20 years ago, where most of what was out there was generated by humans for the purpose of writing it, not for clicks or SEO or anything else. And until recently, a human still had to write all of that click/SEO drivel - AI will be the final nail in the coffin.

Consequently, the old adage of "nothing is ever deleted from the internet" is also not really true anymore, as this content consolidation has accelerated. Occasionally I remember something I saw on the web 20 years ago, finding it now is often impossible.
