Gigguk's summer list also mentioned a few of these. Ossan is 30 years old. I'm so far beyond that now it's sad funny.

As for the Ossan at the geriatric age of 30, the fact that he can move around without a cane, there must be some elf or vampire blood involved.

To consider this show trash is blasphemy. This show exceeded any expectations I had for it and is currently one of my favorites this summer.

To be clear, when Geoff says something is trash, he doesn't mean it's garbage. The video is not a takedown of the stuff it talks about. Most of the time he means trash as in trashy or low-brow/low-effort. Most titles to make it to these videos are the ones with sexual content. It's done with the full expectation that there is an audience who will want to see them (which is part of why his rating scale is so bizarre for these videos).

I understand what trash means in this context, and I contest that classification for the Ossan Adventurer. It's the anime that most pleasantly surprised me this season with how it's NOT trash....

It's the anime that most pleasantly surprised me this season with how it's NOT trash. There is barely sexual content, and only some "she has big boobs" focus frames and nothing more.

I'd give it a shot if it's not trope filled and fanservice heavy. How does it compare to the best of fantasy, such as Dungeon Meishi?

It's really an anime about not giving up on your dreams, and making that career switch you always dreamed of. It's not an Isekai, and the main character is a 30 years old dude who used to be a receptionist at the adventurer guild, but who always wished to be an adventurer since his childhood.

The MC, Rick, is relatable in a good way (i.e. he's not a blankslate self-insert) and it gets even better after EP 3. Jokes are good, and characters are wacky but endearing.

          Edit

Also, speaking of anime featuring a mature main character and solid writing, check out "Isekai Shikakku", featuring Osamu Dazai in another world, going around and pointing out the shit writing in today's Isekai anime.

My take away is that I should watch I parry everything. I mostly skipped around to listen to the names of the animes he thought were good versions of what he was critiquing.

That's a fair way to approach it. I haven't watched I Parry Everything but sounds interesting if you can tolerate the isekai tropes. Anime is best consumed in moderation. (If it's unclear, I'm referring to the dozens of isekai "transported to another world" anime/manga/light novels they keep putting out every year.)

Mother's Basement puts out good recommendations too, if you're looking for actual ones. He watches everything, as noted in the intro of The BEST Anime of Summer 2024 - Ones To Watch, and knows his stuff.

That said, the trash anime can sometimes be good too. Needless to say it depends on individual taste. MB's presentation makes it more likely I'll check out an episode or two of something, rather than avoid it. For example I learned about Yoko Taro's "KamiErabi GOD.app" anime from Mother's Basement and enjoyed the season that's out so far, despite the aggregate ratings being pretty lackluster.

Thanks for the recommendations! I watch relatively few videos, movies, or shows, but really enjoyed one punch man, so his mentioning that parry everything was in the same vein caught my attention....

I'll take a look at the review video you linked. Thanks!
