The actual talent that built the studio left for Trigger and Khara long ago, but still rather sad to see a name with such a history shut down. Time used to be that they were churning out hit after hit in every kind of genre, and you could go on their site and see new illustrations by their artists ever week.

For anyone with an interest in the glory days of Gainax (or just the history of anime in Japan in general), Otaku no Video is a must see!

It was a hollow shell of a company for the better part of a decade with most of the creatives leaving to form Khara (Anno and Evangelion staff) and Trigger (Imaishi and Gurren Lagann/Panty & Stocking staff). But still, sad to see the name disappear after such a storied history.

Mostly? It’s got a nice “what the fuck” per minute ratio and it’s gorgeous. She’s no stranger to weird stuff and felt it was kinda odd by the end but she enjoyed the experience.

Personally, I wasn't really interested in most of their output tbh, but I liked most if not all of the shorts that they've released, and Royal Space Force is fantastic.

Gainax's collapse begs the question: How do you go from producing hit series like Evangelion, Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking to bankruptcy?

I mean I'm aware that they've been going through a brain drain and lost talent who would later form Khara and Trigger, but still....

Imaishi and Hideaki Anno didn't just leave by themselves , they left with a ton of talent, brain drain as you said. Unlike manufacturing that can still print widgets after an architect leaves, creative shops only has creative works to sell with no ability to re-print past winners.

Also, the way things ended was so ugly: the industry is fairly small, expensive projects choosing them over say, Trigger or Khara, would be considered a snub. Cheap projects go overseas or much smaller name studios.

I know that the rights for GAINAX works went to the original creators, but I wonder where the DAICON IV short ended up landing. The chances are low given its age and copyright-nightmare nature, but I hope that the original cels and/or film are still safely tucked away in a warehouse somewhere and eventually find their way into a modern remaster and properly archived, as is deserving of a piece that kicked off a legendary studio.

It's a shame how long they stopped doing that kind of show that American companies are more interested in continuing than them, and also that Khara only does Evangelion. I guess Trigger is all that's left of Gainax, but it isn't my Gainax. I'm more of a Team Anno than Team Imaishi.

Khara has partnered with other studios for things outside of Eva, most recently with Production I.G. for Kaiju #8 (which funnily enough, many find draws strong parallels to Eva) and with Sunrise for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. There's also apparently an upcoming Space Battleship Yamato movie they're working on, as per their Wikipedia page. So it seems like they're starting to expand, albeit somewhat conservatively.

I think I'm more of a Trigger/Imaishi person, but it's difficult to confidently say that given the difference in the number of productions the two studios have worked on.

What? No, Khara does a TON of stuff!

Hideaki is a mega nerd and these are just a few of the things Khara was involved with that isn't even anime:

      • Shin Godzilla (2016, co-produced with Toho Pictures) [uncredited]

      • Shin Ultraman (2022, co-produced with Tsuburaya Productions and Toho Pictures)

      • Shin Kamen Rider (2023, co-produced with Toei Company) [uncredited]

Any way the best part of Gainax wasn't a company, it was a people. His turnip field full of farmers still exist. See this short film from their official channel, Good Baby's History Anime: the Big Turnip (company) - drawn by his wife Mouoko Yasuno, on the 10th anniversary of the studio. It's a 9 minute short but the cast list is ridiculously stacked lol
