This week in Anime: week 43 of 2018

AAAAAAAAH I'M LATE

How do?

Since we're currently lacking native spoiler tags, I'd ask all of you to follow this scheme:
Post a top level comment with the title and episode number of the anime you want to talk about like this
**JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo - Episode 1**
Then reply to those top level comments with your thoughts. This way people who haven't seen something yet or plan on binge watching once all the episodes are out can simply collapase the top level comment to not get spoiled ^.^

What do?

Simply post, discuss or joke about any currently airing anime you want. For Anime you've been watching that aren't currently airing refer to Cleb's weekly thread.

When do?

But what if the anime I want to talk about hasn't aired yet?

No problem, just post a comment here once the episode has aired, these threads aren't meant to last one single day.

There's not much happening in this series as of yet. When it comes down to it every conflict is almost immediately resolved by how overpowered Rimuru is.

I do like how they’re going fairly slowly right now - I’m really enjoying how much of the world they’ve been building, and I absolutely love the graphics and effects when he’s talking to himself (or his great sage or whatever it’s called).

Guess I won't expect much to happen overall, kind of like KonoSuba. At least episode 2 was a lot better than episode 1. Episode 2 has better and funnier interactions between the dragon and slime and a lot less game-tutorial-feeling exposition stuff. I came in expecting a comedy and episode 2 delivered, where episode 1 teetered between not-really-action and not-really-comedy. I'd been worried because the Tokyo parts in ep1 were funnier than the Slime parts, but ep2 fixed that.

The difference for me between Slime and Konosuba is that Konosuba's lack of clear progression was an intentional goof, as the entire series repeatedly sends up Isekai and anime fantasy tropes. Slime, on the other hand, seems to play it's sorta ridiculous plot totally straight and it's starting to wear on me, because I'm not sure where the stakes are any more. Overlord had a sort-of similar problem but managed to make it's world-building and political intrigue interesting enough to keep me watching.

I'm actually interested in what's going on back in Tokyo, but somehow doubt they'll expand on that, given he's dead and all.

So...finally got a chance to watch.

This episode really highlighted, to me, the maturation of the SAO franchise. A dismemberment, near evisceration, copious amounts of blood and an excellently animated fight scene reminded me more of Goblin Slayer than Sword Art Online. By the end of the episode, we did start to see the Kirito of old shine through but it still wasn't Aincrad Kirito. He was badly hurt in the fight and it was only Eugeos intervention, and near sacrifice, that saved the Black Swordsman

To me, it feels like they’re finally getting the SAO formula right. This Reddit post explains what this project is doing differently from the past. To give my shorter opinion: I love how much world building they’re doing. To me, that was always the most interesting part of SAO (and GGO Alternative showed how great a series could be if they just focused on the world of SAO), and with Alicization we’re getting lots of insight into how the game world works, as well as the character’s thoughts and feelings, through dialogue and monologues. The art and animation also looks great!

My one concern, which I share with the last two seasons, is how OP Kirito is. Sure, he got wounded in the goblin battle, but he recovered pretty quick, and even helped transfer some of his energy to Eugeo, and he was fine afterwards. I’m also not a huge fan of how all his sword skills magically transfer over... But I might be overstating it a little bit, it’s still a lot better than the last seasons!

I’m excited to see where this show goes!

Is the fact that Giorno is Dio's child actually going to lead up to something? So far the series seems to want to insist that he takes after the Joestars more than after Dio.

It really doesn't affect the story in a meaningful way. Giorno obviously has some idea of who Dio is, based on the picture he keeps in his wallet, but we never see him follow up on that. All of Vento Aureo, at least in the manga, is focused on Giorno's adventures with the gang. Personally, I think Araki created Giorno because it was an interesting premise for a character, even if he never really explored the concept thoroughly with Giorno learning more about his origins. Also, I think he was tired of drawing the same type of dark-haired tall guy that had been the protagonist since part 1. Parts of Giorno's visual design are very similar to Josuke's, but his hair is... interesting. To say the least.

I love this part, if only for the outlandish designs.

The episode was okay. The pacing feels noticeably slower now, despite this being an action episode. They had a leisurely chat with the ogre which felt strange. The whole time it felt like the ogre was waiting for them to get into good positions to attack him. On a positive note, Goblin Slayer acted pretty much as expected when encountering a non-goblin foe, good for a chuckle.

Not liking the high elf character so much. Despite being 2000 years old and a silver ranked adventurer, she's even more naive and has stronger reactions than the 15 year old newbie. Doesn't make sense.

I also like a lot of the character designs, aside from the superhero designs even the basic characters are likeable.
