This week in Anime: week 44 of 2018

Technically I'm late again, but it's still Friday somewhere right?

How do?

Since we're currently lacking native spoiler tags, I'd ask all of you to follow this scheme:
Post a top level comment with the title and episode number of the anime you want to talk about like this
**JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo - Episode 1**
Then reply to those top level comments with your thoughts. This way people who haven't seen something yet or plan on binge watching once all the episodes are out can simply collapase the top level comment to not get spoiled ^.^

What do?

Simply post, discuss or joke about any currently airing anime you want. For Anime you've been watching that aren't currently airing refer to Cleb's weekly thread.

When do?

But what if the anime I want to talk about hasn't aired yet?

No problem, just post a comment here once the episode has aired, these threads aren't meant to last one single day.

I think I might drop this one now, we haven't really had a follow-up on the level of the tsundere dragon, and it's honestly starting to smell of the standard LN fare of "just sitting around talking all day, maybe there'll be an action scene somewhere" but unlike Konosuba there aren't any jokes. I had the same problem with Overlord, but it kinda managed to skate on by based on it's political intrigue. Here I'm still waiting for that to actually pay of and in the meantime I'm watching slimeboy just luck his way through it all, with almost no stakes involved any more because not only is he not responsible for things going wrong, he also doesn't have to do anything to fix it, everything just fixes itself.

I was holding off on starting this series until after the season was done, but based on all the negative comments about it in these weekly threads it sounds like I might be better off not bothering with it. It's a shame, since the reviews appeared pretty solid and the trailers made it look pretty interesting... but I suspect most of the reviews were written based on the first few episodes before the problems with the show became apparent. :(

Besides, it's going to run for 24 episodes, and we're only 5 episodes in, I think it's a little too early to judge the show on how it's plot has developed.

It doesn't work for me, I don't think I'm snobbish about anime but it's failed to engage after the first two episodes, and I'm not quite ready to forgive it for that.

We finally get introduced to what I suppose is going to be our motley crew for the series. I kind of like the little introductions they all get, compared to previous seasons it seems like Araki gets better and better at being more economical in his writing and letting characters speak more for themselves instead of narrating their backstories and calling it a day.

It feels like we're back to the higher quality animations with this one, in general it seems like this show shines the most when it can fully commit to a joke rather than having to do legwork in reminding you this is supposedly an idol show. The expressions are simple but effective. I like it when an anime is willing to sacrifice the 'cute' factor of it's moeblobs to tell a joke.

Pretty fun laid back episode. Looks like beginnings of some character yarns that might be spun into mini arcs at some point. The friendly character interactions are a far cry from the ice cold brutality of the first episode. I guess you need to care about the characters for the action parts to carry weight.

So after 3 Episodes focused on Kirito and Underworld, we go back to real life to visit Asuna and the gang as they try to make sense of Kiritos current predicament. Except for a couple flashbacks, Kirito is completely absent, this weeks episode putting the spotlight on Asuna as she comes to terms with Kiritos apparent disappearance and what she’s going to do about it. Suffice it to say, the pseudo “Damsel in Distress” from the Fairy arc is long gone, although a certain deus ex machina rears her head again.

One thing that’s always bugged me about the SAO fandom is how quickly Klein was tossed aside for Eugeo as Kiritos BFF.

Like....Klein’s been there from the beginning. The literal beginning of Kiritos story and has always had Kiritos back. When Kirito needed Klein and the Furinkazan, Klein was there.

And yet again, here Klein is. He wasn’t called on to do anything heroic. It was a pretty mundane task. Just drive somewhere.

As usual, Klein is the ultimate bro. Willing to do whatever Kirito, and by extension, Asuna, needs.

We should all be so lucky to have a Klein in our lives

The fan service shot at the beginning of the episode I could have done without, but otherwise it's another stellar piece of animation work. The plot also seems to be softly progressing, both for the antagonists and the protagonists, but unlike some other anime this season they manage to pepper their small details in judiciously and without it ever becoming overbearing or obsolete. If you aren't watching Gridman already you really ought to consider giving it a try. It's very accessible and in terms of animation and plot progression it's honestly the best out of all the anime I'm currently watching.
