What are your favourite slice of life anime/mangas?
I mostly like action and comedy anime, but I've been trying to branch my tastes out and get into some more genres. What do you like outside of comedy and action (especially SOL, but I'm really looking for any good suggestions)?
I believe the classics are some of the best, the main two being Nichijou and Azumanga Daioh. However my favorite would be the somewhat unconventional "Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko" which is a melancholy adventure SOL, where two girls explore a dead world that is similar but different to our world, as they try to piece together the past and meet new people. In some ways I would say it is the 'inverse' of "Made in Abyss", where in MIA they go down, in SSR they go up, in MIA there's tons of action, in SSR it's very calm, in MIA there's a sense of underlying danger, whereas in SSR there's a sense of desolation. If you like it I'd recommend reading the manga, which has an amazing ending in my opinion.
For romance, I'd recommend Tsurezure Children, which is a SOL anime/manga following the romance lives of a number of unique characters. Sadly there's no LGBT representation, although that's not very surprising among Japanese romance media (except for BL content, which is typically seperate). Apart from that however, I think it's very wholesome, and a nice watch if you're feeling sad. The anime isn't very long, but comes to a satisfying conclusion. The manga goes quite a bit farther, although is formatted in a 4-panel fashion if I remember correctly, so it may feel a bit foreign.
For a pure comedy I'd recommend Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan which is a purely humor anime/manga about the life of an immensely powerful psychic 'Saiki Kusuo' who just wants to lead a normal life. It has a lot of common anime tropes, but will subvert them frequently as well. It's pretty all over the place and the comedy is entirely subjective, the first time I watched it I found it hilarious however the second time I thought it was boring, in the end it's up to you whether or not you enjoy it.
Hinamatsuri is a more recent and plot driven slice of life, I think it does a great job blending adult topics (like homelessness, supporting a child, crime) together with an overarching comedic tone that results from the amazing characters. I don't want to describe it too much since I think going in blind makes it even better.
SSR sounds like an awesome concept I'll be into, and I'l probably check out MIA as well. The concept of an abandoned world and just that emptiness is always fantastic.
I'm not into the romance genre, honestly, so I might give that one a pass.
I can't pass a good comedy so I'll look into those other two, though I tend to lose interest quickly a lot so if you found it boring IDK.
The good thing about SOL is that you can jump in and jump out really easily, and as long as you know the basic premise you could wait a month or two and watch the next episode without feeling like you are too out of place. I recommend you give the romance genre a try (especially if you are looking to expand your horizons). I used to believe that romance 'wasn't for me', but in truth I just hadn't been exposed to good romance.
Mmm... if you say so, I do want to expand my horizons. I just feel that every romance (and I haven't seen many, so, not really in a position to say) presents an unreasonable and unhealthy relationship, but I'll look into it.
Usagi Drop is a really good, wholesome Anime! It's very sweet and about a newly formed family and just the ins and outs of guy raising a little girl. Nothing gross in this one. Another one I like is Oshiete! Galko Chan or Please Tell Me ! Galko Chan which is super cute and funny and is just a girl talking with her friends about a lot of life stuff. Maybe one of those will pique your interest!
Usagi Drop is great but don't read the manga, just FYI for anyone who is looking into it.
Hover for manga ending spoilers as to why not, from last time this was brought up.
Oh. Just... why? It sounded like a nice, wholesome experience...
Fortunately the anime doesn't cover any of that so it's remains nice and wholesome.
Ah, good. I'll look into it. Thanks.
oh my god I am so thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed. I didn't know that the manga went further than the anime and it never really piqued my interest since it ended on a nice note... Just wow,
Why not? Is it bad, or a different direction?
See /u/talklittle's response
Thank you. I added them. I'll be honest, my interest isn't really piqued because it just isn't the kind of thing I'd watch, but maybe it's a new beginning.
Love lab sounds fun, added it. As for the first one though, how annoying are they? I sometimes struggle to get through anime with a really obnoxious lead.
I'll add it to see. All in all, watching it for myself is better than a convo between someone who has never heard of the show and someone who may have a slight bias.
Yotsubato is a wonderful SOL manga by the same creator as Azumanga Daioh. It follows the everyday adventures of a five year old girl, her single father, and an assortment of friends and neighbors. It'll probably never be adapted into an Anime, but reading the manga is totally worth it.
