What have you been watching/reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
Amazon was giving away the first ten episodes of Black Clover, saw a few of those. I get what they mean when they say MC has no indoor voice, and I got the dub. Sub is supposed to be worse. Prime also has Princess Tutu, which I'll get around to, eventually, I hope.
PS: A Silent Voice is on Netflix. I don't know how I missed it.
PPS: Aggretsuko Season 2, I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.
Asta's voice gets less annoying after the first season but his character remains annoying outside of any fighting scenes. I think you have to watch it with subs regardless if you want to know what the quiet guy is ever saying, not that it is ever relevant or important to the plot though.
I've been working my way through the first part of Lupin III, which has been a really good time. I'm playing it on this lil CRT next to my desk that I'm streaming to with plex, it's pretty comfy. I'm not normally much of a fan of that kind of episodic thing, but it's got enough retro charm and stylistic flair for me to be okay with it. It's funny how popular and important to anime Lupin is for how much of an absolute outlier the show is, not really contributing to or pulling from much in the way of anime-specific genres and trends. Unfortunately suffers from the 70s anime curse of being recorded using Burger King microphones.
Watched the first Mobile Suit Gundam recap/summary film, which I'm not a fan of. Just lots of explosions and fights without any context until the very end. Frustating and boring.
Watched Interstella5555 and cried a lot. I love Daft Punk's Discovery and I'm a huge Galaxy Express 999 fan so the feeling here is natural. I had seen most or maybe all of it before but I didn't appreciate the power of it until now.
I also saw Senya Ichiya Monogatari (nsfw if you google it), a hyper-sexual and psychedelic telling of various parts of Arabian Nights. I wrote a bit of a review here which isn't great but gets my feelings across, at least. I might become a regular reviewer on AniList, I like the idea of that.
Neo-Tokyo was a bit of a disappointment, though it's not bad. Katsuhiro Otomo's part was the obvious standout and I enjoyed it a good bit, there just wasn't enough for me to bite into and the other parts especially just felt like hollow pretty pictures.
Otherwise I've been continuing Soul Eater and getting behind on my seasonals, the usual. Not sure if this should fall here or in ~books, but I've been reading the LNs for Toradora! and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime since I got a crazy deal on a Kindle Paperwhite on ebay and I've been enjoying my first taste of e-ink reading. No notable thoughts on those that I don't already have about the Toradora! anime, but it's a pleasant experience.
Code Geass is on Netflix so watching that. I forget why I dropped it so many years ago. Probably saw some obnoxious spoilers online. If so, luckily I've forgotten by now. It's a great show, on episode 7ish.
Kakegurui season 2 is also out, I hear, so I'll be starting that next probably. Looking forward to some gambling hijinks. Will be funny to watch right after Asobi Asobase, which is also about playing various games, but completely different kind of show.
