What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
I (re)-watched pretty much all the Ghibli movies recently, so many good ones, but I specially liked The Wind Rises. Probably the best historical movie I've seen, there's a mastery in depicting everyday life that traditional movies can't quite replicate.
I binged all Ghibli movies last year, never having seen any before. Mononoke, Spirited, Totoro, Ponyo are obvious ones, but boy was I not prepared for the bag of exceptional maturity that was Wind Rises. That was when Miyazaki earned permanent place in my personal hall of fame.
You and @Staross should check out Grave of the Fireflies if you haven't already. It's not a Miyazaki film, but it is still from Studio Ghibli, and well worth watching, IMO. Just a fair warning though, unlike most other Ghibli films it's very very dark, emotionally taxing, and based on an even more depressing autobiographical short story of the same name. I think everyone should watch it at least once, due to how important the anti-war messages in it are, but I honestly don't think I have the stomach to ever watch it again.
Yeah I've seen it, Takahata was so good, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya really blew me away. I love this where he explains he messed up the melon cutting in Grave of the Fireflies :

On the list! Thank you!
I rarely find time for anime (or any media) these days, but I just watched "Weathering with You". Last week I watched "Your Name".
How tf these guys take seemingly ridiculous ideas (almost tropes of b-grade Hollywood movies) and turn them into something so beautiful and moving is beyond me. I'd like someone to explain though.
I've been slowly making my way through episodes of The Way of the House Husband. I had read some of the manga, but fell off a little bit. The one on Netflix is more just a slightly animated 1:1 of the man's, and I'm honestly here for the. The beats and timing of the manga are so damn hilarious, I'm glad it's matched in the "anime". The voice acting is great, too!
I watched Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). It was such a cool anime. When it ended I was filled with dread (or emptiness?). Couldn't stop thinking about the story. It sucks that there isn't a second season yet. I rated it 10/10.
The next day I started reading the manga and it exceeded my expectations. I'll be revisiting this one again. It's really inspiring in terms of storytelling and the themes it explores.
Check out the soundtrack: disc 1 and disc 2.
Reading discussion threads for this one is a must I think after each episodes. There are many details I would have missed otherwise especially since I come from a very different culture than the author.
