I just read Vorkosigan Saga for the first time last year, after a few users here recommended it to me. It was great, and I highly recommend it too! I haven't read Remnant Population, or Vatta's War, but them being in the same company as Vorkosigan is high praise, so I have added them to my reading list now too. Thanks for the recs!

Surprised not to see Essun from N.K. Jemisen's "The Fifth Season" in this. What I find most appealing about her is that, while she is badass, she's not so in an action hero sort of way. It's much more of a survivalism story (think something like Oryx and Crake) than a swashbuckling adventure one.

As a (at the time of reading) childless man, Jemisen did a fantastic job of really making me feel like a formerly mighty but presently in hiding mother who just needs to find and save her kid inclusive of all the moral compromises and frustrations and such that come from that.

One of my favorite books that should fit this criteria is The Deed Of Paksenarrion by Elisabeth Moon.

It’s weird that the original badass Jirel of Joiry by CL Moore is not on the list.
