I'm reading Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux (BBC filmmaker Louis Theroux's father).
For some reason 80% of what I read is exploration and/or nautical disaster nonfiction. What can I say, I'm a 13 year old boy at heart. This book is tangentially related and sees the author travel the length of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town, early in the new millennium.
It's an interesting telling of an ambitious and bumpy ride from the unique perspective of someone who lived in Malawi and traveled the region four decades earlier. It touches on urbanization, development, and the impact of foreign aid in Africa, and includes a good amount of standard but interesting travel log content: what does he eat, where does he sleep, how does he get from point A to point B. Some of it comes off as "curmudgeonly white westerner complains about the state of modern Africa", but I'm telling myself it comes from a good place with the well being of Africans being central to his complaints.
I'm planning on switching gears drastically and read In the Miso Soup next.
