I have a couple of questions:

    1. Since the project is similar to twitter why not just create a mastodon instance, why makes this project special that needs to be developed from the ground up?
    2. Will user registration be open at some point or is going to be invite only?
    3. What is your target audience, techie people, artists, writers, a bunch of everything?
    4. As someone that sees themselves as a minority in tildes, why should I join? The reason I like site aggregators more than social media is because it makes it easier to filter the content I'm interested in. If I'm interested on foreign movies, on reddit I only need to find a subreddit that focuses on that, but on twitter I need to find a gal or a blog (possible multiple) that talk about foreign movies and hopefully only that, otherwise I need to mentally filter the content I'm not interested on. Reddit also makes it easier to have my voice heard because I don't need to have a big following for people to notice me, just have an engaging post in the right sub. I guess this is more of a rhetorical question.

I've been on Mastodon for several years, since the early days. What you're describing sure sounds similar. You should investigate Mastodon before going much farther with your own project, at least to identify areas of differentiation.

PS: My handle there is @nattiegoogie@mstdn.io . Feel free to check out my history there, or to say 'hi'.

Now that I've seen the project I think you should consider mastodon more seriously. As someone that has been volunteer in multiple projects over the years I think is very easy to loose focus over time. Instead of building a platform for X people your goal shifts to just building a platform. I think this is where you are.

For what I understand your goal is not to build an alternative to twitter with certain functionalities that will improve the experience, but create a more inclusive and inviting community. Using mastodon will allow you to build the community you want immediately and because is open source there's still the possibility to add your changes in the future.

There's another advantage on using mastodon and that is that it is part of the fediverse, this means that your users can interact with users of other mastodon instances, but not only that, they can interact with users of other fediverse platforms that are not mastodon, there's an alternative to instagram, ant alternative to facebook, an alternative to blogger, and much more. Now I'll admit that the interaction is not as seamless as advertised but is still cool that is possible.

P.S.: I saw the original discussion on discord about this project, so I also taking into consideration how much time has passed since then and your current progress.

If you're adamant on making a new thing, consider adding ActivityPub support (assuming it will end up FOSS and selfhostable eventually, not sure about your plans), though it is definitely not as easy to implement as saying it.

There are things lacking with all the AP-based software today, so I understand if you're not willing to migrate to an existing one.

What they're saying is that you're addressing this social problem with technology in a way that is potentially more risky to attempt given the possibility of burnout. NIH symptom is a powerful force but even more powerful is the burnout that lurks in its shadow. It's strangled many a well meaning project.

A bit of CS / tech jargon, the name for an attitude / ego affliction / cognitive bias that causes people to create their own new ("invented here") thing rather than adapt to use an existing ("not invented here") thing when they should not, as measured by effort expended, value returned, and opportunity costs.

Sometimes building your own thing is the right choice, but it's the wrong choice often enough to be a known problem within the software industry.

Based on the discussion here so far, I'm inclined to agree with Kremor and Eric. Mastodon gets you almost everything you need.

Not only that, but you probably don't even have to run your own instance. There are certainly already existing instances with similar goals to your own.

This is incredibly vague. what is the social issue you're addressing? are there any technical details? what is it?

If you don't want a tech-oriented userbase, you really shouldn't be doing early promotion of the project in ~comp, the most-technical group on Tildes.

In general, by looking for users on Tildes you're just going to inherit the same userbase biases that exist here, but even more concentrated because there's only a certain type of user that will be interested in adopting (another) unfinished platform.

I think you mean to reply to other comment. Regardless, in the link I shared before you can see more software options, maybe one of them is closer to what you want. For example there's lemmy, a reddit clone.

The advantage of lemmy is that is written on rust so it probably can run on most low end servers, the disadvantage is that it is written on rust so it'll be a long long time before the group can make any changes to the software (assuming none of you have previous experience with the language), but given your goal you should probably focus on building a community first.

Wait, if you're trying to tackle context collapse and you don't like the idea of regular posts and want submissions instead, don't like inline metadata (hashtags, at-mentions)... In what way is it:

        In what way is it:

a project similar, in functionality, to Twitter.
