I was laid off recently and I've dedicated my (non-job hunting) time to two projects: finishing my novel and creating a game with my design partner.
the book: I finished the first draft of my novel about 3 months ago. I set to editing it with the goal of cleaning up the language, characters, and plot, and trimming 20,000 words to get it under 100k. After finishing that editing pass I shared it with 5 alpha readers. I've gotten some great feedback and criticism from my readers and I've been outlining and rewriting with their suggestions in mind. The alpha reader process went much better than I expected as 4 of the readers finished the book in a month, had similar likes and dislikes, and said that they would be happy to read the next draft as they really enjoyed the story.
the game: I've been designing games professionally for about 10 years. Over the last 3 years I've developed a design partnership with a close friend. When we got laid off, we started designing a game together. We're both interested in tight, simple games, and we excel at systems and content design. Our experience is mainly in collectible card games, and we're making a rouge-like, card-based, auto-battler. It's similar to Balatro and Slay the Spire, but with a unique and transformative take on deck and resource management.
I'm interested in following your game! I love the number of entrants in this genre.
Thanks for your interest. We've got a discord now but it's currently friends and family. We're hoping to be feature complete by the end of the year and we'll open up around then for early testing.
Me? I'm plugging away at sequel to a novel I completed about a year ago. I started it in April and my ambitious goal was to have it mostly complete by the one year anniversary of completing the initial novel. Now, I'm giving myself a break and want to have it completed by the election this year.
The story is a violent, nihilistic, urban revenge story that takes place during the coronavirus pandemic, but one that should twist and turn to place that I intend to make truly heart-wrenching. The first one was good, but if I can pull this next one off the way I intend, it will be like The Empire Strikes Back meets Breaking Bad. I want reading this to be a truly punishing experience.
Hello my good tildes! It is once more that time of year -- ARTFIGHT! If you don't know what artfight is, it's an annual art game that only lasts the month of July. The idea is to just swap art of characters, but there are two teams and each piece of art done earns points (called attacks). The theme of the teams isn't relevant to what you draw, it's just to have people split out.
This is my 8th year!! I've done a couple of pieces already and I'm looking forward to messing around with styles and dialing in how I color. I think coloring is one of my weakest points and artfight is always a good opportunity to try out different techniques.
Finished these bookmarks that are gonna double as to/from gift tags. I stitched a clean back onto them so that they look tidy, and while this means they are a bit thick, I think it's alright. They might get mashed a little flatter once they get used in books, too. The stitching around the edges is my first ever attempt at a ladder stitch, and it was honestly pretty hard around the corners but I feel like they're passable enough to give away.
I also stitched this and attempted to mount it real neat which was not easy lol but it was for a special person in my life who instantly said that she was going to find a frame and a place on a wall somewhere to put it up - and that's just the absolute best compliment I could ever hope for!
