I'm currently reading Dead and Gone, the twelve book in Andrew Vachss "Burke" series. It's a corny, old, detective/thriller series, but I'm hooked. I'm gonna take the series all the way to the end.

After Dead and Gone, I've got Yellow by extreme horror writer Aron Beauregard. The three books I've read by him are pretty juvenile, but I'm gonna check out another one by him.

Then, after two easy reads, I'm gonna take on Cormac Mccarthy's Cities of the Plain so I can finish off his Border Trilogy. Gonna try and learn how to make homemade tortillas and beans afterwards, because I want to eat them following all of his books.

I tapped out of The Stormlight Archives after Oathbringer. Not because I didn't like the story (or was worried that Sanderson wouldn't finish the books) but because there's so much shit in those books to remember, I would need to give them a second read to really absorb them. And seeing as those fuckers are all a thousand pages plus, I only want to do that once.

So I'll wait until the last Stormlight book comes out this winter and just binge read the series from the start.

Fail Safe is an absolutely chilling film that gets looked over because it came out the same year as Dr. Strangelove. I think Kubrick even pulled some shenanigans to make sure his film came out first, since their premises are so close. But they are very different in execution.

Miracle Mile is an 80's cult movie that also deserves a spin in your nuclear apocalypse playlist. But Threads is the worst of them. Only watch it if you're feeling too happy one day and need to bring your joy to a screeching halt for some reason.

She was great in Blonde, but the movie itself was pretty reviled amongst critics and viewers, which puts a damper on using it as a springboard.

Just that "movie star" isn't the pinnacle of fame it once was. There are almost no actors who can guarantee box office anymore. An actor can star in a blockbuster, but then their next film can flop.

I'll admit, I haven't watched her roles in either The Gray Man or Ghosted. As a John Wick fan, I'll probably see Ballerina when it comes out.

But, I would encourage Ana de Armas to lean more into the actorly side of her talents. Her role in Blade Runner 2049 was incredible, as was her acting in Knives Out, which brilliantly downplayed her sexuality. Blonde was a mixed bag, but her acting was one of the bright spots in that difficult film. And I thought she brought some refreshing twinkle to her small role in No Time to Die.

If I was her agent, I'd be shoving more dramatic scripts towards her before consigning her to the female action movie ghetto.

If theaters would quit showing a half-hour of previews and ads before a movie, I'd probably be more likely to go and watch them in theaters. Ten to twelve minutes of previews and "let's all go to the snack bar" ads is about all I can bear.

Two hours seems to be a reasonable amount of time for your average movie. But when that means I have to be in a theater for two and a half hours because I have to view endless ads with Nicole Kidman telling me about the magic of movies at AMC (like I don't already know which theater I went to) then fuck off with that. I wanna watch a film and then hit the bar for at least an hour before last call.

Aliens will always have a special place in my heart. I wasn't allowed to watch R-rated movies, but I was over at my friend's house in Hawaii watching this on HBO back in the 80's and was blown away. I was ten and had never seen the original Alien, but Aliens was a fist pumping piece of cinema full of guns, flame throwers, robot suits directly aimed towards the amygdala of a young boy. It was feminist without being political. It made you wish your mom had a pulse rifle to mow down hordes of xenomorphs. It had a lesbian coded Latina who was a hero in her own right. The heroes became cowards, but some of them still became heroes in the end. Aliens is as close to a perfect movie as I can think of. It will always belong in the pantheon of classics. It is the perfect action movie following the perfect horror movie.

His ten film limit is entirely self-imposed. Get rid of that and the expectation that his "last" film needs to be an absolute banger go away entirely.

For one, it's insulting to directors who have directed incredible movies after their tenth. I get that "writer-director" is a different dynamic, but then what do you do with writers with more than ten novels or screenplays?

Tarantino's filmography has allowed him to do whatever he wants for as long as he wants to. Why throw that away?

Also, give "Once Upon a Time..." another chance. It is as rewatchable as any of his other films, and I'm sure the Movie Critic would be as well, if he'd given it a chance to see life on the screen.

Even as a Tarantino fanboy, everything I've read of the premise of The Movie Critic didn't sound like something that would blow up my skirt. I trust my boy would make something entertaining out of it; maybe even something profound. But it would be a smaller scale and very personal picture. Not something that you declare as the deneuoment to your career.

My suggestion for QT would be to abandon his self-imposed ten film limit, shoot The Movie Critic, and then afterwards direct scripts that he hasn't written himself. All of his films have come from his own, singular vision, and I think it would be interesting if he switched to being a more collaborative filmmaker later in life, raising voices for the next generation of cinema.

One thing to consider is that short stories are not necessarily minor-league novels. You do not need to become a master of short-stories before you get into writing novels. If writing a novel is what you want to do, feel free to skip to practicing that instead of working on short stories. You are not skipping steps in your evolution if you want to go directly to longform works.

I remember seeing Stalker for free back in college in 90's. It was projected off a non-restored print in a vast lecture hall with the subtitles hard burned on the print. I often think my film student days were wasted back in college, but the number of epic movies I got to see on actual film makes me think it might have been worthwhile.
