On audiobook, I've been listening to Starship Troopers while I go on walks. The movie is good, but there's a ton to unpack in the book itself. Been reading tons of threads about the book this past few weekends.

In text, I'm getting through this detective novel called Bonds which, to me, feels more like a male-oriented romance novel/ego-boost. Apparently, the main character always gives every woman he meets multiple orgasms, dates his secretary with no thought of sexual harrassment lawsuits, gave the main victim of the story multiple orgasms and she was only killed because she broke up with him and got involved with the wrong man. The main character of the book literally describes themselves as an "Alpha" to one of the women in the story and there's more description of his meals at Peter Luger than there are of the tedious plot.

Gonna finish it anyway, just for the lulz. This shit is the definition of "divorced dad lit".

If you're in Chicago, trying the Italian combo (Italian beef with a spicy Italian sausage in the center with giadinara) is a must. Instant meat sweats whenever I have one. It's glorious.

I won't draw any assumptions about OP having such a visceral dislike of EEAAO without even seeing it. Bizarre, but not necessarily indicative of racism.

As a half-Asian guy though, EEAAO hit the sweet spot for me. Over the last few years, I have noticed and appreciated Asian-American moviegoers being treated as a target audience for a change. However, many of the offerings left me feeling flat. Crazy Rich Asians kinda left me feeling flat, as did Shang-Chi. I enjoyed Minari as a quiet slice of Asian Americana life. Parasite was great, but I consider it a foreign film since it doesn't feature America as a part of whole story.

EEAAO, on the other hand, hit every nerve of my id. I'm generally inclined more towards to weird, philosophical, sci-fi plots. EEAAO has this, along with plenty of martial arts action, which makes it a win for me.

Michelle Yeoh was an actress whose works I've loved since seeing Wing Chun at a midnight movie back in the mid-nineties. Stuff like Supercop, and Tomorrow Never Dies were my bread and butter. I was joyed to see her slowly breaking into western cinema.

And Ke Huy Quan was many 80's Asian kid's hero from his roles in The Goonies and The Temple of Doom. When I was a little, I wanted all the gadgets that Data had, and went so far as to try and create crazy plans for them. Seeing him again, when we are both approaching middle age, was fucking great.

Obviously, I have a cultural attachment to EEAAO that OP does not have, but the film struck it hard for me.

I plowed through his Cartel Trilogy last year and loved it. The Force is a one off, and I'm not quite done with it, but I really admire how fast paced his writing is. Sweeps you along and makes you read compulsively. The story itself is a pretty by the numbers corrupt-cop drama which recalls old shows like The Shield and The Wire. But I loved both of those, so I'm on board with this book.

Overall I had a decent time. However, many of the music cues and sequences clashed strangely with the scenes they were attached to. There is a world where a bloodbath scored to Madonna's Like A Prayer works, but Deadpool and Wolverine was not it.

I was reminded of this even more the next night when I went to see Longlegs in an adjacent theater (which is a very quiet movie) and could hear nothing but Deadpool blasting next door...

I'm also one of those people who have mainly read Dostoyevsky. I read Crime and Punishment in high school and thought it was one of the most brilliant books I'd ever read. It came to me at a time when I was a 90's era incel who loved nihilistic movies like Taxi Driver and books like Less Than Zero. I didn't realize that Crime and Punishment was the antidote to those works.

Later, I took on The Brothers Karamazov, Notes from the Underground, and The Gambler. All of those, I only read once, and probably need to go back and give them a second go to fully appreciate them. And then there's the rest of Dostoyevsky's bibliography I need to get through.

In terms of other Russian lit I've read, I did Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Achipelago (when I was on a vacation to Hawaii of all things) and that moved me. I tried to crack Tolstoy's War and Peace once, but didn't finish it. I need to try again so I can get into his works.

While Cruise has an impressive resume and has worked with most of the greatest directors in the biz, I disagree that his name alone ensures impressive box office for twenty years or so. For nearly a decade, Tom Cruise was considered, if not box office poison, then an actor whose personal life my overshadow a production (this is all following the whole Oprah couch jumping, weird Scientology video leaks scandals). Edge of Tomorrow underperformed theatrically. The Mummy was a straight up flop. The Mission: Impossible series have been consistent earners, but none of them match even mid-level Marvel films in box office, and the last installment made less money than the Qanon film The Sound of Freedom last summer.

In fact, Top Gun: Maverick was the first film starring Tom Cruise that made over a billion dollars. Zoe Saldana had starred in more billion dollar franchises than Tom Cruise has.

Tom Cruise could die tomorrow and his filmography would be considered legendary, but producers are not necessarily salivating to have him involved in their projects.

I've been re-reading (or, more like, re-listening on audiobook) Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers recently. I remember when the Verhoeven film came out, one of the main nerd objections to the movie was that there was no power-armor, where in the book it featured prominently in the story.

Perhaps Verhoeven decided to leave the power-armor out of his film because of the special effects requirements to truly render it properly.

When I watched Edge of Tomorrow (was fortunate enough to see it opening weekend) I initially thought about how far FX had come to have actual power-armor combat served up on the screen. What I was watching was almost exactly what Heinlein described in his book.

Besides power-armor, both Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow seem to have an emphasis on military structures, heirarchy, and discipline, and also a faceless, anonymous, inhuman enemy. Where Starship Troopers (both the film and the book) explores the society such a structure would spawn, Edge of Tomorrow sidesteps any larger world-building issues in favor of it's Groundhog Day like plot.

I've never read All You Need is Kill, so I'll have to tackle that someday to see how the book compares to Edge of Tomorrow. But if they were ever looking to remake Starship Troopers, it would probably look alot like this film.
