Speedart for May 22 to 28th!
As there has been positive response, let's get the party started!
Speedart created in 60 minutes (or less, but not more!) during this week is welcome in this conversation. You can do as many as you like, out of any media. In homage to the folks over in ~music, I'm going to use music as my theme this week - but you do you and have fun!
A couple of thoughts:
~ Out of courtesy to your fellow posters, please consider social appropriateness, pornography legislation, and giving a heads up in the post if there is gore and/or nudity.
~ One of the best gifts you can give to someone who has the joy or courage to post their work is appreciation of their efforts. :)
GO! ARTIFY!
Here's my first one this week. 1 hour, two inktense derwent pencils, and water.
I forgot how short an hour is! So short. TT_TT Must...put...pencils...down...
That is well done and quite pleasant. The colours you chose work really well together. It reminds me of something but I can't quite put my finger on it. :/
edit: Ah I got it... van Gogh used a lot of similar blue/yellow combinations, that's what it reminded me of!
p.s. Do you have an Etsy shop by any chance? If you don't you should consider it IMO. Especially if you put up some of those custom M:TG cards I bet you could make a killing (if you can do that, copyright wise).
Thank you! I don't currently have an Etsy shop, but so many people have been telling me to get one that I may have to.
Copyright for altering cards is not an issue for WotC. This is because I'm not making a proxy; I am using real cards. Sort of like a used book store selling a used book that has been drawn on. Proprietary characters come under fan art if they are unique and original art that is not mass produced. Even mass production has loopholes as long as the characters are clearly in the fan art realm; re: teeturtle
I keep the number of cards that I paint with the same pattern to under 10 copies. All of them are slightly different. Since there has been much interest in the Mononoke Mystic, I will probably paint four more. That's an M:TG playset - although people will probably buy them separately. :)
Blue and Yellow (or orange) have colour wheel relationships. Other similar combos are purple and yellow or red/green. This subject is because @Brian and @Emerald_Knight have sucked me into ukulele-ing, with a joke nod to Picasso
Ah that's good that you don't have to worry about copyright violations and can sell your custom cards. I know about fair use, in theory, but not really how it plays out in real life so was just curious where your custom cards fall in that regard.
Well you better make sure you let me know when your Etsy shop goes online then, because I want one of those dang Mononoke Elvish Mystics! :P
Lol! I will reserve one for you. XD
Thanks, I'd appreciate it. :)
This is really good!
Thank you! You've made me very happy~
Wow.
Wow! That is so cool!
Did you choose those colors for a particular reason? Why does it look watercolor-y when you did it in pencil?? Halp me learn what is art!
Thank you to both @DrFaceless and @lirtep!
Colour wheel logic is something most people know already without knowing why. XD Sort of like native speaker language proficiency - you just do it because everyone around you did.
I chose blue to start with because of Picasso's piece "The Old Guitarist." The nod to a famous piece made me laugh. Then I picked an orangy yellow to fight with the blue because I wanted it to have a bit of tension. Colours near each other on the wheel give a peaceful or harmonious feeling. Colours opposite on the wheel when used in a piece will give an energetic or active feeling.
The pencils are super cool because when you get the drawing wet they turn into watercolour. If you dip the pencil tip in water before drawing it gives saturated/strong colour. Like this!
Second speedart of the week here
I really want to continue working on this one with pen and metallic acrylics. But this is what it looks like after 55 minutes. I'll finish this later and will post the final result and time after. :)
I want you to know that I pulled myself away from the eastern conference finals, where the Cleveland Cavs have a 3 point lead over the Celtics (despite being seen as underdogs on Celtic's home court) in the fourth quarter, and I did it to say that what you did in 55 minutes looks pretty epic considering you don't plan on being done just yet.
That's how much I care.
BuckeyeSundae, you are a bad, bad man. XD
How could I possibly compete with the Cavs! I am not worthy! (They did win though?) Thank you muchly~
I love this! Can't wait to see the finished product :)
I love it! It evokes for me Neil Gaiman's short story "The Return of the Thin White Duke" (which he calls "unabashedly fan-fiction")
Sorry for the late submission! This last week was a little crazy, but here's my contribution. The image includes the primary reference image I used, my initial pencil sketch and a final digital paint. I'm not super fond of the flat colors in the final image, but I ran out of time because I messed around with some of the less important details too much. It's like an allegory for life.
I love it! I'm particularly fond of the brushwork on the tail and lower body. It gives it an enjoyable tactile feel.
I have a huge barrage of questions. XD. Rather than machine gunning them at you, I'm going to just ask a couple - I dun wanna scare you away!
What program do you use? Do you have a tablet? Inquiring minds want to know! :D
For sure, just ask away! For software, I try to use opensource projects like Krita and mypaint primarily (because I'm bit of a FOSS fanatic), but I have been known to use Adobe CC on occasion. My submission was done in Krita. I have an old Intuos2 that I bought off of ebay several years back that I use for stuff like this.
Oooooo. Do you recommend Krita then? I've been looking for an opensource paint program. How is the gui? Intuitive?
Is the reference pic yours or did you find it somewhere? I have no idea what sort of bird that is.
I don't know that I would put much stock in software being intuitive or not. I feel like it's just as easy (or hard) to use as photoshop, but just with a different focus (e.g., more focus on painting and less on photo manipulation) that might make some things easier/hard to achieve based on what you are used to. If you want low friction digital canvas mypaint is a good one to keep around as well.
The reference image is just one that I ran across on google images when I was trying to brainstorm what to draw. It's of a bird of paradise, I chose it because I thought painting the iridescence on the throat would be fun.
I think I'm posting this just under the wire? Here's my attempt at drawing a thing in 1 hour. I used watercolor and a little watercolor pencil over the top because I painted on the back of an index card and the colors bled quite a bit.
I don't have a way to scan anything so apologies for posting a crappy cell phone snap. Also bear with me if the formatting on this post is wacky; I have no idea what I'm doing.
Dang, Baardvark. An index card??? Mad props for upping the difficulty and pulling it off. :)
Mine are also crappy cell phone pics. Don't worry about it. I love the liveliness of the seaweed and the same feel of the tail. It pulls it together and makes it one whole composition instead of the seaweed being and add on.
Thank you for looking/ commenting :)
It was one of the big 5x7 cards... I like doodling on index cards now and then, but they clearly don't take wet media well. I will have to dig out my watercolor paper for the next speedpaint!
Also, @mistrele this might not be the best time to attempt such a group endeavour because we are still relatively small, not everyone here is an artist (in fact I suspect they are in the minority given our invite pool) or are interested in ~creative, and we don’t yet have systems in place to assist community effort/events like this gain traction. So if this one doesn’t take off please don’t be discouraged... the timing just may not be right yet and some time in the near future I think this will be a great idea.
P.s. That message goes to everyone on ~ right now interested in starting group traditions/events. We want to encourage them, help facilitate and promote them but just don’t have the capabilities or user base to do so quite yet. So please don't give up just because your first attempt wasn’t successful.
For the record, even if I'm not actively replying to a post, I'm still interested in seeing the comments. I'm not particularly artistically inclined, but I still enjoy looking at these posts and seeing what people come up with!
No worries. I'm having fun whether I'll be the only poster or not. Regardless of what activity eventually succeeds, something eventually will and be even more fun! :D
Since no one else has art posted for the time period, I declare this speedart over! (Although I'm still going to be rude and post my finished guitar guy later.)
Thank you so much for participating and commenting. Hosting for the next thead is up for grabs! :D
