Oh yeah! Amarok (especially version 1.4) is still the sunny pinnacle of what a music player should be in my mind! I still miss so many of its features even though I mostly use Spotify on my phone these days. The moodbars were one of my favorite features! And the dynamic playlists! And being able to do more than thumbs up a song! Ah, I may have to go dig out my old HDDs and get lost in the music and nostalgia...

While I'm thinking about it, I don't know if I've ever heard why @Amarok has that as their handle. Is it because of the music player or is it directly a reference to Inuit mythology?

I'm a wannabe mushroom hunter, but there's not a ton where I live. I do manage to find couple morels each season, but nothing like other foragers who get baskets full. But the ones I do find taste so good crisped up with some butter!

I've always liked foraging for berries (primarily huckleberry, haw, service, and current), and things like mint so mushroom hunting was a natural progression.

That source is wrong about the cost-per-view for an ad by an order of magnitude (or at least in inconsistent in what they present; the average cost comes out to $0.02 by their own numbers!). Consider this article instead, which also highlights the variability of the cost but nonethless shows that the cost is on the order of cents per ad view. Also note YouTube's cut is 45%!

Which, honestly, leaves me asking why I can't just bid for my own views and pay what the advertisers pay (which is significantly less than YouTube premium for the vast majority of users)? E.g., just load up my account with a few dollars and it automatically disburses to YouTube and the creator whose video I'm watching for every ad that would otherwise be shown?

It's a small thing but it's feels like a step down that we went from a nice dark themed UI in BotW to all these white headers on the inventory list in TotK.

I second the recommendation for Thimbleweed Park. It's more pricey than you might expect but you can usually get it cheaper on Google Play than you can from Steam.

What are your thoughts on eventually adding post pinning for a group? Or group specific defaults? The reason being is that purposefully long running threads will be effected by the change in the defaults. As an example the speedart threads over in ~creative last for a week before being retired and I would imagine the number of submissions dropping significantly if the thread is not bumped by thread activity.

Okay, it's been a little while since the last speedart thread, but I think we are ready for another one! All the same rules apply.

Remember, the purpose of this thread is not necessarily to create a masterpiece, but to encourage people to dedicate some time each week to improve their art as well as providing critique and support. Thus this thread is open to all either as constructive critics and/or artists!

There is no official theme, but if you are looking for inspiration checkout this month's Pictures of the Day over at Wikipedia Commons.

Now grab your materials, set a timelimit, and get creative!

Yeah, the initial setup is more involved and if you don't have the aliases setup it's a little more awkward to use, but for me it's less complexity than needing to grok any additional magic done by a dotfile manager. It's just git doing what it's best at.

After using a few different dotfile managers I finally settled on using a simple git repo. This setup is inspired by a comment by StreakyCobra on HN where he uses a bare git repo whose work tree overlays the home directory and a couple bash aliases. There's no custom software or scripts to install and when the configuration files diverge between machines I simply make a branch for that machine. It works pretty slick.

Nicola Paolucci did a nice write up on the method and put it here if you want to know more.

This is surprising to me, because that is much more stringent than what I imagined you'd say. And I'm not convinced that Tildes will ever meet that criteria. In fact I would be surprised to find many such divisions in much more divided communities like reddit, or the old usenet.

The reason being that even if Tildes was several times larger and auto subscribe was turned off that there would still be enough people who visit multiple ~s (acting as bridges) that the entire community (all of the ~s) would be a single connected component. In other words no single ~ would have a mutually exclusive set of users from every other ~. Of course I might have the wrong mental model, in which case maybe you explain a little more?

This was at least one of the reasons @Deimos has waited this long (relative to internet time) to create new groups. And the question of when to auto-subscribe users I think is dependent on how many ~s there are and is therefore reducible, for the moment, to the question of when to create new groups. Obviously the metrics for determining when enough growth has occurred will vary from person to person, but I'm curious what your criteria are for sufficient growth? Are there some criteria that are necessary, but not sufficient to justify creation of new groups?
