@vivarium, you know what you were doing and you should be ashamed of your self :) [1]

I feel stupid for asking this, but... Are there any pictures of this font actually being used in a Word document?

Maybe I was spoiled by @jdsalaro's lovely programming font blog post that showed actual real-world examples of how each font looks in practice, but... The last thing I want to see is a snazzy neon-tinged mockup with busy images and graphic elements polluting the actual font bits. This article (and the underlying Microsoft Design blog post) hurts my eyes. :v

I hadn't even realized the history of the font, nor did I know about the other competitors. It's fitting that my favorite of the fonts is Skeena! One of my best friends in university had an absolute princess of a cat with that name. We lived in BC, Canada at the time, and it seems as though it's an indigenous word meaning 'divide', hence its use as the name of a river in BC. :)

I really, really, like Skeena Display's bold plus italic combination. It's just chef's kiss for a yellow tabloid or something :)

I was also a bit surprised by how subtle the differences were between the individual Calibri and Aptos glyphs. However, if you click back and forth between the two, you'll notice that there are quite a few fundamental differences. Your comment made me realized I'd like to point out those, so I added a small Main Differences section https://jdsalaro.com/note/comparison-new-microsoft-default-font-calibri-aptos/#main-differences

Fabulous write up! I found tenorite the most friendly, something about the x-height and the roundness, I suspect, but I appreciate Aptos adding tails to differentiate the uppercase i from a lowercase l. I’ve been getting more into designing for accessibility and that one in particular is a huge help to people who have vision or processing challenges.

I’m going to poke around the rest of your blog now! Great comparisons, thanks for sharing!!

It's a very considerable change, and I added my remarks regarding serifs (tails) after @smoontjes mentioned how much or little difference there was between both of them on the surface.

Please do so! Also, I'm sure you'll find typos, don't hesitate to let me know about them or any inaccuracies you find. I use hypothesis(the sidebar on the right) to track and fix mistakes, so you can join if you want to annotate in-line.

This is a good post, my only note being that I think you should try to make it clearer in the body of the post which of the fonts is which when you're comparing them. At the top, in the first comparison, you have a label under the first comparison that says that Aptos is above Calibri. It took me a moment to realize that was reversed for the rest of the comparisons, without any labels noting that, so when you were describing the difference in words, it confused me looking at the accompanying pictures and seeing the opposite. The interactive thing at the bottom is really neat, though, and I think your characterizations of the fonts are accurate and interesting!

I had similar difficulty with the suddenly switched ordering without labeling. I had to go back and forth a few times to the top sample to figure out that they were switched.

It's fixed and the changes should be reflected in a bit (Y)

Somehow I find Seaford very readable and pleasing to the eye. It's got a nice personal, almost hand-written quality to it that I find endearing.

It is! However, yesterday evening I realized there are slight weight variations at some points where two strokes meet and that was bothering me a lot. Here you can see what I'm talking about...

Probably that slight "hand-written" quality you mention comes from those same weight variations bothering me hehe :)

Yeah absolutely, that must add to the effect. I guess those weight differences must be an intentional design choice, even though it seems a bit random as you pointed out 🤔
