Large parts of Japan's coast are on tsunami alert - even as far south as Okinawa. Warnings to immediately evacuate are constantly repeated on TV. No reports of any damages yet, but it's pretty tense.

I remember in the Noto earthquake you’d see cars driving by while the tv was showing coastal footage and telling people to evacuate. This time the footage seems quite empty, so I guess people are getting out with plenty of warning.

If i'm reading my various feeds right I believe the biggest concern right now is hawaii. They're saying it could hit all sides of the islands due to its size. Here's hoping people are taking this seriously, as I know that hawaii has a history of false positives. Even if this turns out to be nothing, the possible alternative could be horrific.

At least its pretty far from Hawaii, there are chains of islands in Alaska which are much closer, I don't even know if the people living there are going to be able to know anything is coming for them

8.8 is MASSIVE, and they just had a 7.5 last week.

Also, it was wild to check the http://tsunami.gov site when a friend first linked it, because back then the whole west coast was clearly lit up yellow. I think it's still all under some sort of alert status, but the orange doesn't stand out quite as well on this type of map so I had to zoom in.

Wild to see such an important site be close to unusable on mobile.

Yep... I'm using it on mobile too, and navigating that map is a pain. I've had to refresh multiple times because that's easier than trying to get the map back to the original spot/zoom manually....
