Vermont's largest energy source is now a virtual power plant

    As temperatures climbed into the high 80s and low 90s and air conditioners pushed electricity demand higher, Green Mountain Power (GMP) dispatched 90 megawatts (MW) from its VPP. The network combines residential batteries, utility-scale storage, and other clean energy sources.

    GMP says the 90 MW dispatch was roughly equivalent to taking 50,000 homes off the grid during the peak. Avoiding electricity purchases when wholesale prices are at their highest reduces the costs that ultimately get passed on to all GMP customers – not just those with residential battery storage.

    The estimated $6 million saving follows the $11 million that GMP says its VPP saved customers last year.

    GMP’s virtual power plant now has 110 MW of capacity, making it Vermont’s largest single power resource by capacity, according to the utility.

    More than half of that capacity – 53 MW – comes from residential battery systems. The rest includes utility-scale batteries, EV chargers, hydroelectric plants, and commercial buildings that can temporarily adjust their electricity use.

    More than 5,000 GMP customers now have over 10,000 batteries enrolled in the VPP. During a grid peak, GMP can draw on some of that stored electricity as one coordinated power source while leaving participating homes with backup power for outages.

    The batteries can now supply nearly 10% of Vermont’s summer peak electricity demand. GMP says that’s the highest storage-to-state-peak ratio in New England.

    GMP was the first US utility to offer a state-approved, tariffed home battery lease program. Customers can currently lease two Powerwall batteries for $55 per month or pay $5,500 upfront for a 10-year lease. In return, GMP gets access to some of the stored electricity during peak demand. (I participated in this program when I was a Vermont resident, and it was fantastic. Having two Tesla Powerwalls in our cellar kept our electric bill reasonable, and the lights on and water running when the power went out.)

    The growing VPP has already allowed GMP to permanently close peaker plants in the towns of Vergennes and Rutland following an ISO-New England retirement process. Peaker plants operate when electricity demand surges, but they’re often expensive and carbon-intensive. GMP says it plans to retire more peaker plants as its battery network grows.

      Thanks for highlighting the power wall portion, I already participate in their program allowing them to turn off my EV charger in exchange for cheaper rates while charging, which they do semi-regularly, more often than I expected, but not enough to be a problem. I’m surprised how cheap the power wall rental is, I’ll have to look into it, but I suspect that does not include the installation costs. What was the process like for getting it installed?

    As a resident of New England and someone who works in power generation, this is the first real good step I see towards renewables. I'm still not seeing batteries (or home solar power) as being the feasible method moving forward*, but this is a wonderful start.

    * I feel batteries are not financially or ethically sustainable yet and still have a small but epic chance of catastrophe, similar [imo] to nuclear power.

        Oh definitely, and I'm thrilled they don't require rarer metals. But the chance is still there.

        My workplace had propositioned the town to install a ~8MWh battery farm (local nimbys shot it down), but one of our biggest concerns was actually the fire containment/suppression systems. There was relatively little "harm" that would be done if a failure/fire did occur (the banks were well-sectioned and the majority of the setup could remain functional), but the result of the chemicals and runoff would have been such a huge pita, both physically and in relation to regulations/reporting.

          I get the local concern, especially the dread of paperwork, but this seems like a cognitive bias.

          One awaits the proliferation of an inexpensive solid-state battery which has minimal propensity for fire. But one can wait indefinitely for the perfect chemistry. I have to wonder what the psychological threshold really is. Can any battery be good enough?

      Aquious Metal Cells look really promising. As far as I can tell they're basically self contained fuel cells. I've heard a presentation from this company, Enervenue, and one of the most interesting take aways to me was essentially "we couldn't figure out how to get these to combust." The cells produce hydrogen inside as part of the charging process, so theoretically there could be a failure mode that could cause a fire, but the company hasn't found a way to make it happen. Not sure if another company will be able to compete with them (can't remember if it's a trade secret or patent), but would love to see more stuff like this.
