I don't understand why people insist on posting content stuck behind a pay wall. Share a mirror or the archived link instead if you're trying to share information.

As I understand it, u/Deimos has asked people to share the link to the primary source as the main link, and if they want they can share a mirror link in the comments. The reason people continue sharing content this way is because that's what we've been asked to do.

Yep. And the reason for that is because Tildes is a Canadian site, run by a Canadian registered non-profit, so is subject to Canadian laws, and up here paywalls are considered Technological Protection Measures which are illegal to circumvent. That's not just a pure technicality either, as both individuals and businesses have been successfully sued over circumventing news site paywalls (E.g. Blacklock’s Reporter v Canadian Vintners Association). So in order to avoid potential legal issues, submitting primary sources is a rule here, and any links to paywall bypassing sites can only be made in the comments where the users who post them take on any potential liability themselves.

cc: @JAG, @Greg (since it's about more than just link rot, although that is a valid concern too)

It’s a question of stability vs convenience. If the main link is the original you can use that to find mirrors, but it’s much harder to go the other way if the main link is a mirror that then goes down at some point in the future. Link rot is something I see regularly in search results now that we’re a solid 30 years into the eternal September, so it’s not just an academic concern.

I also find that people here are pretty good at commenting with an alternative link most of the time - and I’m sure others would appreciate it if you add one if you do come across an article you can’t access! If an alternative link is “missing” it could easily just be that the original poster was on a network where the main link isn’t paywalled in the first place.
