It's getting colder, so give me your best hot cocoa recipe!

I'm fairly happy with mine, it's simple and tastes good, but I'm hardly a chef so I'm sure it can be improved. Bonus points if its simple enough to do when you're tired as hell and just want a nice drink.

Mine:

Start heating milk on low heat, then slowly add sugar and cocoa powder while mixing, 1 tbs each per 4oz of milk. I find this pushes the saturation limit of the milk a bit too close, so I add some more in to make sure everything dissolves. Add in some cinnamon, along with a pinch of nutmeg and salt. Once hot splash in a bit of cool cream and serve.

    Hot chocolate @ 125 g/l

    Ingredients

    • 275 ml milk
    • 35 g chocolate

    Instructions:

    1. Pour 150 ml milk in a sauce pan
    2. Set heating of stove to 8/10 (temperature setting)
    3. Put 125 ml of milk in a frother or somewhere it will be heated (basically we want 125 ml heated milk at the end, I also froth it)
    4. Put all the choclate in, for best results, break it in to bits (like it's normally devided into little rectangles, so just seperate them)
    5. Use a spoon to continusly lift up the chocolate bits, to make sure they don't stick to the pan
    • It should take about 5 min, eventually most of it will be melted
    1. then you pour all the milk into a mug

If you don't have a milk frother, there are two ways to froth milk. Results will not be as good, but still better than nothing. French press. If you have a french press, you can put in hot milk...

      1. French press. If you have a french press, you can put in hot milk about a quarter of the height of the container, and pump repeatedly with the filter part. The milk will froth rather decently, but the froth will not be stable like when it's done with a proper steam frother.

      2. Immersion blender. Hold it at an angle, like 30--45 degrees, immerse all of the blade but make sure not all of the part that covers the blade is immersed; and blend. It won't be as good as the french press version, but still can add a bit of fun to your drink.

    Ingredients:

    • 4 fl oz Heavy whipping cream
    • 4 fl oz Half & half
    • 4 oz 70-80% Dark Chocolate
    • A vanilla bean
    • A cinnamon stick or two

    Instructions:

    1. Place cream, half & half, vanilla bean, and cinnamon stick into a sauce pan and heat until warm
    2. Break chocolate apart to speed up melting process while milk warms
    3. Remove vanilla bean and cinnamon sticks from milk
    4. Melt the chocolate into the milk and serve

I used to always have some %80 dark chocolate handy and use it for hot chocolate, but I never remember to buy any in recent times. It's always better with chocolate IMHO.

A quick and easy recipe for a 400 ml drink:

    • Put a well heaping teaspoon of cocoa powder and as much sugar as you like into a mug

    • Boil very small amount of water (in electric kettle it takes like 30 seconds) and pour about 70 ml into mug

    • Microwave 300 ml of milk in a bowl until lukewarm

    • While the milk is microwaving, thoroughly mix and dissolve cocoa and sugar in water

    • Add the milk and the hot cocoa is ready to drink right away

You can do these steps even more at the same time and have the drink ready in a couple minutes, from zero to drinking.
