...that said, as someone who's been a vegetarian for quite some time... what's the big deal with Beyond Burgers? I've tried two now and, to me, they are just as OK as the other veggie patties I've had. MY favorite is the Boca "All American" Veggie burger, and you at least get 8-12 per pack.

Versus Beyond Burgers where-- correct me if I'm wrong-- but you only get TWO for like $7-8? I mean they're good, but they're not really worth that price, imo.

I've tried two now and, to me, they are just as OK as the other veggie patties I've had. MY favorite is the Boca "All American" Veggie burger (ironically I think it's the regular Boca burger that's my least favorite), and you at least get 8-12 per pack.

i think at least part of it is that they're marketing it toward people who eat meat, not necessarily toward vegans and vegetarians, and accordingly the way they (and impossible foods, who do a similar thing) make it reflects that; in other words, they're not necessarily going for a vegetarian burger so much as for a meat substitute which looks and tastes like meat and happens to double as a vegetarian burger.

Again, totally happy to see more options on the market. I just really hope their price point doesn't become the norm (though both Boca & Morning star have already done some shrinkflation recently).

The goal is not to target vegans and vegetarians, per se, but meat eaters.

"We're going to go after the vast majority of people who are still buying meat as our customers," Brown said. He believes that one day, consumers will prefer the taste of Impossible protein to meat from animals. The approach also allows Impossible to shrug off concerns that it could lose customers who want a healthier, less-processed product, or for whom a blended meat and veggie product is preferable.

i should probably note though that they are, ultimately, trying to normalize at least some form of vegetarianism, since their goal is "...to help eliminate the need for animals from the meat supply by 2035".

as far as pricing goes, my understanding is that both beyond meat and impossible foods are trying to get the price point of their products down, and that it'll eventually happen, it's just a matter of ramping up production. impossible foods specifically is shooting for mass-production in the next 3 or so years, which they think will be when prices finally start dropping significantly:

For now, customers have to be driven by ethics or curiosity to eat these meat alternatives because Impossible Burgers are more expensive than their flesh-based counterparts. But that should change, Brown told me at the event, because plant-based burgers require less land and resources than ground chuck. Impossible Burgers should be cheaper as soon as the company is big enough to capture the efficiencies of mass production, he said.

          And when will that be?

“With the caveat that this depends on scaling and other variables, probably three years with a high degree of certainty,” Brown said.

From my experience with the Impossible Burger, which tastes "ok" in comparison to fast food burgers, maybe that's all it takes is marketing to the "extreme and experimental" side of American Cuisine, as compared to the health/veggie conscious aspect.

If you market it as, "keep your veggie burger, we made an effigy to everything you love about meat and we didn't even have to KILL A COW!!!🐮" That's obviously going to get you interest outside of the the traditional vegetarian market.

Beyond Meat (BYND) plans to report its second-quarter earnings today after markets close. (This news article is from last week.)

Expectation is revenue of $50.7 million, a rise of 203.5% from $17.4 million in the corresponding quarter of 2018.

The key will be guidance issued for the next quarter. At a 200% growth rate, guidance for Q3 should be around $78 million.

Options markets seem to expect the stock to either be $40 or $300 by 2021, from the $217 today. I have my money on the $40.
