I haven't gotten to play any games yet but I'm looking forward to it. I'm not in the tournament scene any more, so mostly just do beerhammer with friends. Really glad they chose to release all of the rules online for free, and as a longtime Tyranid player (since 3rd edition) I'm pumped to see so many new Tyranid models and be the big bad for the edition... Hasn't happened since 4th!

Given the online nature of the ruleset I am hoping they'll be quick to adapt and try to bring both faction parity closer and inner faction unit balance into a good state. They've set themselves up well to do this with the online nature of everything, and the designer commentary is clearly written and answers almost all the questions players had about the edition so far. It's a great direction to move into.

Excited to pick my half of the Leviathan box up on Saturday!

I have not played any games yet, and my FLGS is hosting a big event for the launch of 10th.

I'm a bit scared to dust off my admech army though, it really seems like their ruleset is not up to snuff with other factions.

Love it. Played my first game on Saturday and loved every second of it, especially considering I took a 2 year long break from 9th, as I was utterly sick of how portly the rules were. Started playing Age of Sigmar instead, as well as many other games (Bolt Action and Gaslands are my favorites so far) and didn't really look back; but 10th is hitting at just the right time for me, when I'm pretty burnt out on AoS and while I was excited about my new Bolt Action army (British 8th Army! Almost done painting them, but 10th distracted me), I'm all in on 10th now.

Love the fact that points costs are consolidated, so I can pick the right tool for the job, not what's "most efficient" according to the meta. Plus my armies rules (Necrons and Orks) seem pretty fantastic and very thematic. My Necrons really feel like they're reanimating and just study as hell on the tabletop; next game I'll try out my Orks and see how they go.

I'm not super happy about what they've done to my Space Wolves in particular (gutted the wargear options for a number of units which mean I have to proxy and/or take apart and rebuild stuff, as well as very so-so faction rules) but the core rules of the game seems like quite an improvement from the one test game I've played so far.

I quite like playing wargames with reference cards anyway, so I'm looking forwards to getting my hands on the new official ones for 10th, it's a way better way to play the game than paging through a codex book or a bunch of printouts

I think 10th edition has had a good launch. Personally, I found 9th too bloated with plenty of "gotchas" and "oh I have this fancy faction specific thing" which leads to an elongated rules lawyer discussion each turn. I have been playing since 7th and found 10th to be streamlined, simplified, and much more welcoming to those getting into the hobby. Surely GW will be adding in new things and most likely some unneeded bloat as the edition ages, but I love the lean set as is. Another pet-peeve of mine was the ludicrous number of stratagems which felt like they should just be special abilities. I always trimmed out half or more of my factions' stratagems for games (Hear, hear for the Space Wolves clan and long live the Golden Boys!). My last point to complain about 9th was how I required at a minimum 2 full single-spaced pages of content for my "one pager" in order to play a game effectively. I love that I can have a true "one-pager" in 10th and terms/vocabulary stretches across factions (I am looking at you Heroic Intervention).

Moving onto what armies I have been running. I have only gotten one game in with the Adeptus Custodes (My poor bikes god nerfed to all hell) and had an enjoyable time against an Orkz player. The game flowed well, didn't have lengthy turns, and left me feeling satisfied and powerful. The Custodes have some serious fight first opportunities and I really felt like they were an elite army on the battlefield. I was cleaving down Orkz in droves and taking on the hordes of hell for the Glory of the Emperor! I like how characters can join units and I was able to integrate my Blade Champion in with the Custodian Guard. Felt like he was leading a team of warriors he has known for millennia. The new battle shock mechanic was probably the most difficult thing for me to wrap my head around and get into the habit of. The Custodes actually have to worry about the mechanic vs the morale mechanic in 9th. I ultimately lost the game (the opposing player is just overall better than me and more dedicated at the game than I) but was left feeling happy. I enjoyed every second of the game and am glad we are going back to the basics and away from the endless books of rules to reference each turn.

Looking forward to the FW datasheets and to see what the new reference cards look like. Additionally, curious to try out some Space Wolves to see how they have changed.

I'll be brand new to 40k when my Leviathan box ships. Any tips on learning how to play, other than reading the rule book?

Find a friend and just have fun! Go slow, be humble. The best thing you can do is announce your intentions when interacting with a unit. Saying something like “I am moving 5.5” out of my 6” so this unit is 18” away from your unit and can use X ability or weapon.”

Stating things clearly this way let’s your opponent know what you are doing and clears up any misunderstandings and miscommunication.

Most importantly just have fun. That’s what it’s all about.
