This is neat. I've owned this game for something like 8 years and only played it a couple of times for what Steam tells me is 5.9 hours, but I don't even remember that much.

Been recently getting some YouTube videos recommended to me about it, which caused me to go back and reinstall it again for the first time in so long. When I have some time, I really need to jump in and give it another go.

I was in the same boat as you. Bought it long long ago, wasn't super impressed, moved on. But in the last couple of years there have been some significant mechanical, combat, and exploration updates, and on top of that the modding scene for the game has exploded. It's a great time to check it out, and their upcoming release is designed to make the late game and wilderness game much more viable, with the explicit goal of making it possible to make everything you need to survive from scratch.

After this upcoming release, a multiplayer server could run for years with new characters no longer being able to start as a burger flipper or policeman, but instead being a hunter or smith, as old professions fade and new/ancient ones come about to handle a world where the supply chains and infrastructure that made modern society are no longer feasible.

If you can't tell, I'm pretty excited about Project Zomboid. The learning curve can be harsh, so if you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.

At some point I'll definitely be jumping back in! Currently got some games in the queue before PZ, but it's definitely on my list now to play.

I read in one of the past years blog posts they're planning to redo most of the lore of this game soon. I hope they keep it as vague and horrifying as it currently is. Taking the time to watch the TV and listen to the radio during one of my earlier playthroughs are here the tidbits about what's happening were some definite highlights in getting me immersed in the game.

On the note of lore, a recent Blog post this month talked about them adding more readable lore. Newspapers, news letters and many other pieces of written media will now be readable, and often mark locations of interest on your map. In an earlier blog post they talked about the newspapers having information on the lead-up to the Knox event. I'm really looking forward to reading those once they're added.

They're also adding 6 new tv channels and a bunch of new radio broadcasts in the next update. I'm really excited to see where they go with the worldbuilding.

A "fun" little bit of video showing clips of news from the first week of the timeline in Project Zomboid. As it's set in 1996, it uses era-appropriate clips of news anchors and public figures with AI modification to tell the story of the time before the infrastructure fails and you're left to struggle against the horde without the conveniences of modern society.
