It's also the reason I've never really found Majora's Mask to be a great game, it's good but the time limit just makes the game more frustrating than it does fun.

I'm actually more OK with games like Stardew Valley, but the day mechanic definitely caused me to miss large portions of the game.

Mostly I'm curious if other folks feel this way and found ways around it. Id like to play these games, but rushing each day just isn't fun.

All of the events which are tied to the calendar will come back around on the same days every year and you can keep playing indefinitely.

Technically, you could miss out on one relatively minor thing when it first launched but even that got changed in a patch.

Yeah, I should clarify too. When I say miss I mean skip.

For example getting on the bus in the morning to do the digging/combat thing. I liked that part of the game, but eventually I didn't feel like I was making progress since each day reset.

When compared to the first digging/combat area (mines?) as long as I made it to the checkpoint (or something) I was making progress. In the bus area though I just couldn't advance. Which meant I wasn't going to be able to finish one of the house quests, which means eventually it just wasn't fun to play anymore.

I fully remember Stardew Valley as a fun game, but I've never had a desire to go back to it since I know there are parts I don't enjoy and will ultimately block my progress.

I love Pikmin, but the day/night cycle is core to the game. If you absolutely don't like it, you won't get on with them.

IMO, this is only really a "problem" in the first game, where you are hard locked to a max of 30 days, but you can easily complete the game in less than 30. Rather than thinking you need to rush, part of the game is planning what you're going to get done "today". This can include opening up other areas ready for access tomorrow, or clearing out areas so you can get multiple items in a day.

I happily bought the re-released Pikmin 1 & 2 last week on Switch, and will have played through 1, 2 & 3 again before 4 arrives...

I loved Pikmin 1 but it was this weird masochistic relationship. As a kid, it always made me so sad to see my little pikmin get killed. Especially when I had to hurry back to the ship and some got left behind. Nightmares. I know its a game, but as a kid I looked at them like my companions and didn't want anything to hurt them. The anxiety of losing pikmin and the pressure from the time limit made it hard for me to play.

I think Pikmin 4 seems like a good way for me to return to the franchise.

To be clear they didnt scrap the time limit, they scrapped the hard limit of 30 days, meaning you don’t have to worry about running out of days - you still run out of time daily!

Thank you. I wasn't exactly clear in my post, but that is what I was referring to.

Check out the demo, I've been playing through the first 2 games since they came out on switch, I just finished the demo and holy hell they improved the formula tremendously. Zero frustration from pathing errors killing your pikmin unexpectedly, lock-on targeting, which is a huge improvement over the free-aim of past games, and there's no need to go beyond carry minimums anymore as the minimum is the max speed pikmin will carry an object, it also won't let you throw more pikmin than are needed at an object to prevent unnecessary extras. So in summary, a ton of the frustrations of past titles are removed.

Oh also, while the day mechanic is still in this game, there is no time limit, no food mechanic like 3, and while you are in a cave no time passes. In the demo I was able to knock out 3 caves back-to-back taking my time in each in the last 1/4th of the day.

Oh, I also forgot, something they added to 4 is a quick rewind feature, so if you make a dumb mistake and kill half your pikmin, you don't have to redo the whole day anymore, you just rewind before you made that error.

The day mechanic is a core part of the game. However in Pikmin 1, I didn't like it either and it was specifically bc you have a limited number of days (30 days) so there is time pressure. You have more than enough days to beat the game unless you're really screwing around but the thought of losing a whole run made me crazy. I think I ended up beating it in 20 my first time but I did restart days a couple times.

Pikmin 2 and 3 don't do this just FYI, you do still play day by day but you have unlimited days to beat the game. I assume 4 will be the same.

Pikmin is one of the few series that has improved with every entry imo.
