"All I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record, it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen." - Conan O'Brien

That doesn't mean I'm never a cynic, I just ensure it doesn't consume me. Conan took a terrible situation and turned it into a great thing (his tour, new show, podcast, etc). If Conan can do that, I can do that.

So I've really been enjoying the combat in this game, but I do agree it could be better. In general once combat starts, it doesn't end until one side defeats the other side. I would love to see a little more mid-battle communication.

As an example (and I'll be generally spoiler free), I can only think of one battle where the bad guy runs away and taunts you to follow. Also only one case where a bad guy has a second form. (Although a few do have charge attacks.) There are a few times battles, but only one of them is really memorable.

Additionally there is a battle where the traditional enemy is in your side, and actually in this rare case there is a voiceover of a character telling you who the bad guy is (but not why the traditional bad guys are good, which FWIW is actually OK in this case.) This one stuck out to me because I jumped into battle expecting to fight one thing, but was confused that I was fighting another. While the colors (green = good, red = bad) told me who to fight, it might have been more fun to have someone yell at me mid fight.

That isn't to say the combat is boring or only simple, I just know it could be better, especially with a little dialogue.

Realistically I see this series trying to build up the WHY that is the events before The Force Awakens and the rest of the sequel trilogy. We have 30 years to play with. That's a lot of story time.

I read what you wrote originally, but I'm only getting back to it now.

Anyway, we're on different pages but I am curious to hear your thoughts on Strange New Worlds, a specific episode related to Lower Decks assuming you've seen it.

If you're not sure what I mean then I apologize, otherwise (spoilers ahead) what did you think of the cross over? I thought it was a lot of fun but I think that's only because I'm aware of both sets of characters SNW and Lower Decks. It was a corny and cheesey episode, but it was fun.

You mentioned having not seen Clone Wars and Rebels (I think) and I think you're right that Ahsoka is leaving viewers like you out. It's exactly the reason I wanted to have this discussion. As someone all in I'm excited to see where this is going. If I were on the outside I'd be completely confused and felt left out.

Also, I want to bring up Andor. I love Andor. We should (and will) get more Andor. However just because Andor exists doesn't mean Ahsoka can't also exist.

I'm also a Star Trek fan. If you haven't seen Enterprise, I get it, but it's still a fun show. It's not 90s Trek. It's no TNG. It's no DS9. It's no Voyager. Each of those is special in their own way. But also Enterprise is fun too.

Star Trek Discovery is weird. I've got some complaints but also the most recent season took us somewhere new in the Star Wars universe.

Star Trek Picard? The first season is not TNG at all and it's rough. Season 2 isn't even Star Trek (ok, it is) but it's a crazy new direction that just happens to be called Picard season 2. Then we have season 3 which is really what all of us wanted from the beginning.

I like some of these more than others, but really I just like Star Trek. I like the people. I like the characters.

That isn't to say you can't criticize. If a season or show is bad, we should call it out. It's rare that a show is perfectly all the way.

Mando 1 & 2 we're fantastic. Book of Boba was a misstep (with some fun) and Mando 3 wasted the Darksaber.

Anyway my point is, you can have fun with each of these stories. You don't have to like every one of these shows. But if you don't like a story it may be worth looking at who this story is for and seeing if they like the story. You might be missing out.

  8. Ahsoka - S01E04 Discussion

Warning: this post may contain spoilers

Spoilers for Ahsoka Season 1, Episodes 1-4; but also Star Wars Rebels & Clone Wars, or really any Star Wars (including Mando/Book of Boba) is fair game.

I kept the title vague but I really want to discuss the World Between Worlds.

For those unfamiliar that is where Ahsoka found herself at the end of episode 4. For those familiar (again, Rebels spoilers) it is a special Force place that can view and, in at least one instance, interact with the past. By all accounts it also has some echos of the future.

It's not technically "time travel" but it will potentially be viewed as such and have a similarly long lasting affect on the Star Wars universe.

Do you think the World Between Worlds is a good idea? What story do you want to see told? What story do you think will be told?

Angry Birds is actually an interesting example because after the original was removed from app stores (in 2019), it was brought back in it's original form (in 2022).

Sadly in 2023 it was again removed "due to the game’s impact on our wider games portfolio".

Which, reading between the lines, means that people weren't playing/paying as much for their other games, because the classic version is all people really wanted to play.

It looks like iOS still has a version available, but Android users are SOL.

I created my account on a random network (social.linux.pizza), if I click the search hashtag button and search for "Mark Ruffalo" , I get two results. One that is definitely Mark Ruffalo (@mastodon.social), one that definitely isn't.

Maybe I search "George Takei" instead, I found him @universeodon.com.

So I hear this "read the manuals" or "do your research" argument but I don't get it.

You install the app, it says "create a Mastodon.social account", you click the button, create the account, and you're in.

Yes I know you might want to pick the "right" server, but they federate with each other. It doesn't really matter which one you pick.

Instead of saying I'm @foobar on Twitter and I'm @foo_bar on Threads, I now say I'm @foobar@mastodon.social on Mastodon. But realistically the second part doesn't matter since if I put in just @foobar on Mastodon I'm going to figure out pretty quickly who I wanted.

I'm aware that technically there are some small subtle things that matter in all this, but if Twitter and Threads users just made all their accounts on mastodon.social it would really just all work out just fine.

To add to this, it's also very clear that Threads isn't really ready to launch, but as a company you can't ignore Twitter shooting itself in the face.

The Threads that launched is barebones. I expect usage to drop to near zero in a week or so, especially now that Twitter reverted it's moronic "must be logged in & limits" rule.

That isn't to say that Threads will be a failure. Twitter is still going down and Threads is positioning itself to pickup the users. But real Threads user adoption (including EU users) will be later in the year once they've added more useful features and figured out how to handle the EU issues.

The time to strike is now, so they striked. Assuming Threads is popular with the US market, the EU market will join when it's available.

there are multiple places on the internet which are nominally devoted to a particular subject, but to which I in fact only go because there is a particular individual (or multiple of them) with whom I enjoy talking.

Can you give examples or explain this?

My only "social media" was Reddit. I couldn't tell you a single username of another Reddit user. The subs I subscribed to were full of people discussing a common topic. I do understand the general appeal of following people, but I don't know of anyone on Reddit that was worth following.

For example I know the late Peter Mayhew used to pop in to various Star Wars threads and leave a nice little comment, which was nice, but that isn't why I was reading Star Wars comments. I didn't follow Peter to see when he posted. I always appreciated it since it was always clearly coming from a place of love, but that isn't why I was there.

In fact for me personally I prefer not knowing who people are. I think of Dave Chappelle's joke, "Where's Ja at?", would this discussion improve if we brought in a random celebrity and got their opinion on the topic? If we're discussing writing books, it makes sense to get Stephen King's opinion. If we're discussing the latest Android update features, Stephen King is welcome to provide his opinion but I don't really care unless he has something insightful to say.

(yes, including Googlebot: Twitter links should soon disappear from Google), and any service that doesn't go through Twitter's official API.

Google and Twitter have been friendly for years before the Musk takeover. I can guarantee Google is utilizing the Twitter API. Now I know Musk has ruined the API for most users but he likely kept whatever existing deal with Google existed. That being said I don't expect this relationship to continue, especially if Twitter is a paywall. So it's likely Google removes Twitter, but not for technical reasons.

(aside: third-party reddit clients continue to work even without logging in because reddit is an indexable website and so can be scraped.)

That's not quite true either. Any existing third-party clients were using the existing API. When you make requests using this API you supply certain identification data. In all likelihood Reddit (but possibly app developers in order to keep their quotas at zero and avoid a bill) revoked part of this identification data. I would expect any app that still works without logging in will start to break after the US holiday.

Making a huge breaking change on a Friday before a long weekend is a terrible idea. While the new policy is in effect it is not yet fully enforced. I would expect this upcoming week (possibly the one after) to completely cut off third-party API access.

Now it is true that scraping APIs or similar tools will likely continue to work, but apps definitely aren't using them.

I don't think Reddit will ever truly disappear.

Look at Digg, it still exists. It's also difficult to measure when the quality drops "too far".

Before I erased my old Reddit comments/posts I found many of the 10-15 year old ones were generally low quality since I was 10-15 years younger (and younger you is always an idiot).

But, to answer the question of Reddit disappearing. I think what will finally kill Reddit (and Twitter) in the spirit of what you mean is the moment a new "event" occurs outside those platforms.

It'll probably be something tragic unfortunately. But the information won't be on Reddit. Sure Reddit will have a copy, but Reddit will be a middle man.

Also, wild prediction, Twitter dies in the next 12 months, competition like BlueSky or Meta Threads aren't ready yet and users flock to Reddit. Reddit sees a bump in users causing an increase in valuation. Reddit makes a bunch of money, enshits itself further and becomes the "Facebook" of generation. Not the "cool" Facebook mind you, but the "only my parents are on it" Facebook. Sure it makes money, but it's garbage.

That was largely my opinion as well.

The entire intro with young Indy was great.

I think what bothered me the most were the dropped or unexplained plot elements.

Indy is wanted for murder, maybe? Don't worry about it.

The CIA character is willing to help the Nazis who are overly trigger happy. I guess it was a space race favor? Nevermind she is dead.

Also Indy is getting a divorce, not really sure why. Then one really well acted but sort of out of nowhere scene where Indy talks about Mutt. Then at the end they're not getting divorced. I can make it make sense but just feels super rushed.

Indy says to his goddaughter "You don't remember that last night I saw you". Events unfold. Oh you do remember. But then also let's go back and watch that scene, but it won't really tell us anything new.

Show Teddy learning to fly a plane, great. Then make Teddy fly a plane, great. But also the real pilot is sleeping and can fly the plane. Lucky that worked out.

The Nazis followed us to the fishing boat. We got away and tricked them. I hope they don't follow us and instantly know where we are going. Oh they did? Darn.

Trigger happy Nazis kill dozens of people, dead in one shot. Shoot Indy. Not dead. Well let's drag him along and also the being shot mostly won't matter.

I'm sure there are more. I did have fun watching this, but there is a lot that was rushed, poorly paced or just didn't make sense.
