Humble Bundle: IGN Editors' Choice - The 9 and Above Club
Price: $16 USD
All games in the bundle have received a 9 or a 10 rating from IGN.
Posting my thoughts in a separate comment to keep the top-level bundle listing neutral:
I've only played two games from this: The Forgotten City and Paradise Killer
The Forgotten City is worth the price of the bundle alone, IMO. I don't want to overhype it for anyone, especially because it has some jank you have to get past (it originally started as a Skyrim mod), but I loved my time with it. It's got a lot of heart. The less you know about it going in, the better.
Paradise Killer didn't do a lot for me. I was initially interested in its design and aesthetic: it's kind of like an open-world visual novel where you have the freedom to roam around and talk to different characters. Conceptually and artistically the game looks and seems really neat, but it simply didn't grip me. Steam says I played for 2.4 hours before stopping.
The bundle also offers three free months of IGN Plus. It's free so, like, go for it if you want to, but as someone who bought a Black Friday sale for IGN Plus last year, I can say that it's disappointing and not worth the money. You can see the rewards they offer for being an IGN Plus member, and they're almost entirely sweepstakes entries and discounts for merch. They occasionally offer Steam key giveaways, but they have very limited stock. If the game is even remotely well-known, they run out in hours.
As a counterpoint from someone who really enjoyed Paradise Killer -- gameplay-wise it's basically Phoenix Wright plus some open-world platforming. The lore is wild and fed to you in a really interesting way imo, and the vaporwave aesthetic is really fun. If you like Phoenix Wright/Danganronpa-style games, you'll probably enjoy it; if you don't, you probably won't. I was meh on the platforming but it was implemented well enough to not distract much from the stuff I was there for.
Absolutely agree with you on The Forgotten City. It's a very well-written game and a wonderful experience, and you should absolutely go in blind (I didn't and I still enjoyed it, but you will absolutely enjoy it more if you do).
I've also played two other games from this bundle: Disco Elysium and Spiritfarer.
This bundle is amazing.
Disco Elysium is a classic. It oozes style and has a fantastic world. It's the most recent example of a stellar RPG that I've played (and making these type of hardcore RPGs is what I do for a living). Although I consider Planescape: Torment to be the best RPG, Disco Elysium is easily my #2, and so is very much worth playing.
Wildermyth is a ridiculously fun little story and tactical game. The developers hit a sweet spot with the strategic depth and complexity of the turn-based combat (it's not too deep, but not overly simple), and combined it with an endearing character-driven narrative system. The comic-book panel styling is a good touch and a fun way to tell some simple stories. The simple stories on their own give enough motivation to move from combat to combat. But, what makes Wildermyth shine, in my opinion, is the permanent changes that are made to the worlds and characters as stories unfold. It's a surprisingly compelling game and I enjoyed all of the stories that were available when I played it. (Although I should note that it's been about a year since I played the game.)
The Forgotten City is a masterpiece in my opinion. It's a wonderful story, easy to play and quite satisfying. It's not too short, and not too long.
I found Paradise Killer immensely interesting. I enjoyed exploring the world and learning about its inhabitants and history. But it is pretty much a (well written!) VN with some very mild first person platforming to collect evidence.
Thanks for posting this! A couple friends have recommended Disco Elysium to me and earlier I was looking at the Disco + Control bundles on Steam and GOG, but for the same money the Humble Bundle is a better value and includes The Forgotten City which is a fan project I've been wanting to support for a long time. These are going to be great on the Steam Deck.
Keep in mind that Forgotten City was in a recent Humble Choice! So was Disco Elysium, iirc.
Chivalry 2 (August 2023), GRIME (June 2023), and Spiritfarer (May 2023) as well. Paradise Killer was less recent but was still in a Humble Choice back in July 2021.
This is a great bundle for anyone not subscribed to Choice, but it’s almost entirely redundant for those that are — Wildermyth is the only game that hasn’t been in a Humble Choice yet.
Reposting my comment from the last thread since the deal just came up on Friday, probably the best deal I've seen on some of my favorite games ever:
Humble has a 100 Year Anniversary sale for WB: https://www.humblebundle.com/games/wb-100-play-legends
The 15$ tier is probably not great but if you're missing all the Arkham games for 10 bucks is definitely worth it
Now I’m trying to decide if Back 4 Blood and Gotham Knights together are worth $15…. Curious if anyone has any thoughts.
I own everything in the bundle already. Great games, generally. Thanks for sharing !
