It's still toxic but probably a lot less than before. Nowadays you can mute everything. You can also default to chat off. They've also restarted doing rotating game modes. I found the experience...

if you have a friend you can always just try the arena mode! I heard it's up again, basically 2v2v2v2, so you don't really have to worry about anyone but your partner.
