How do you like your Minetest?
I'm considering setting up Minetest with the Mineclone2 mod and also the Dwarf Fortress style caverns mod (and maybe some other stuff that mod recommends like a hang glider and ropes)
Does anybody else play? What's cool?
Minetest is one of those things I always install when testing out linux distros but never really play for more than 15 minutes. It's totally my fault though, I know that Minetest vanilla is as barebones and un-fun as it can get due to mods being mandatory.
How active has the fan-mod community gotten these days? Are there any notable "complete" experiences out there for people to try?
The only major game I've attempted to play was NodeCore due to it's very intriguing description and Outer Wilds style progression. Sadly it's so obtuse that I can't even get an idea of how to really start it, gameplay-wise. It's probably a cool experience once things start to click into place but that first hour of just poking around was more frustrating than anything.
I had the same experience with nodecore. I really wanted to figure it out, but the game didn't really give enough clues, and there was almost no help online.
Nodecore was too hard for me to be reasonably fun.
Repixture is "complete," and not actively developed. Wuzzy, the MineClone2 dev, is maintaining it for later versions. It feels more like old-school minecraft, and is different enough you'll likely not run into any issues comparing it to Minecraft.
Mineclone 2 is an incomplete Minecraft implementation. It mostly works as far as I've played, but there's something of an uncanny valley effect. I just compare it to the original when I play it, and spend too much time thinking about it. I keep a copy available, but it makes me want to just play Minecraft.
I like Repixture because it's more stripped down, rather than being an uncanny Minecraft clone. Wuzzy, the Mineclone2 developer, maintains it currently. It's not in active development, so it's at least a stable game to play without worrying about constant changes.
TBH I also just like the old-school play loop of Minetest Game. Tack on some mods you want to make it fun, like mobs, mesecons (for redstone), etc, and you can give yourself a pretty great experience.
I tried mineclone 2 but just couldn't stop comparing it to Minecraft. It's fun, but some of the differences just get on my nerves after a while. Most notably was the mob spawning/behavior. Mobs seemed to move too primitively and spawned way too often and inconsistently. I did want to like it though, and I found a lot of the other experiences to be a lot of fun.
