Do any Tilderinos play Flesh and Blood the TCG?
Flesh and Blood is a trading card game (think Yugioh, Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, etc) which only launched in 2020 but has been rapidly gaining popularity across the world.
If you’re familiar with other trading card games, this has some key differences in the pace of the games. Usually, players have limited resources to begin with, and build up resources throughout the game. In FaB, however, players start at their strongest with the most access to resources, and slowly exhaust these resources as the game goes on.
I played MtG casually for a bit over a decade, and I have a number of friends who all enjoy the Commander format. I never had the skills or budget to play in tournaments, but that’s never been my thing anyway.
I’m just curious if there are many other players here on Tildes.
If you play, which classes or heroes to you prefer? What do you think of the way the game has been managed so far? Do you play casually or are you more ambitious than that? Do you play online or do you stick to exclusively in-person games? How did you get into the game, did you play other TCGs before or is FaB your first foray?
What's the feel and pacing compared to Magic? I'm always interested in hearing about TCGs when they're in a healthy state.
I'm generally a Golgari/Sultai midrange player looking to eek out every smidgen of value to close out or drag out the game. Is there a particular character/deck I should check out if I want to try?
Is there a good draft/limited scene?
I tried drafting recently, and it's incredibly hard! When I first started learning how to play, this video had just come out actually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wk78rhLdlA and it's very relevant still! would recommend giving it a good look.
I don’t think there are easy comparisons to make between MtG play styles and FaB play styles, but I think you’ve accidentally nailed what I’m enjoying about the game — because you refresh your hand every turn, a win or a loss can come because you made more efficient decisions about how to use the cards and when, so I think your existing play style already slots into FaB!
At the high level tournaments, the format is usually a mix of “Classic Constructed” (probably equivalent to Standard in MtG) and draft, so in my experience, most stores will dedicate some game nights to draft because they know people want to get polished up before heading to the big events.
I also recently watched a video that made the point that FaB is closer to a fighting game (think Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat etc) than it is close to other card games, so if you’re into fighting games, this might also be a draw for you!
I've played it a couple of times at conventions. I like it, just don't have a lot of time to play much.
I just got back from vacation and I'm thankful that this post popped up right as I was landing! I've been pretty into FaB recently because the LGS I've been spending a lot of time at is one of the biggest FaB stores in the country! The guys at the store are super nice, and I learned a bit from one of the best players in the world actually.
I started playing very recently, and I've been playing a lot of Nuu because of Mistveil. Got caught up in the hype too and ended up buying a booster box, and also tried my hand at drafting. I really like the company's approach to the game a lot, and they seem to be going for competitive and longevity, which seems pretty nice. I do like that there's no official way to play online either since it helps funnel more people into the LGS's.
I've been playing a lot of commander recently too, but honestly FaB has been just way more fun!
This is similar to my experience — I’d heard online that FaB was this new game that people enjoyed, so I decided to pop into my local game store on their FaB night, and everyone was super friendly and welcoming! One of the players had a duplicate of the deck he usually plays, so he lent it to me for the night, and everyone was happy to take it slow and teach me what the cards do and when to attack or block to get the most value.
I really enjoyed that deck, and when I spoke to the guy who designed it about what he likes and why he built it, I decided to make my own (admittedly more budget friendly) version of it, and I’ve been slowly improving it since then.
Turns out, my local might be one of the toughest in Australia, because the following week that guy who lent me his deck was overseas (along with about half the other regulars) winning a tournament!
Yeah! It's super interesting considering that it's a competitive game by pros for pros, but still super friendly. I really like the system a lot actually, ended up teaching a friend today some more!
haha maybe our friends know each other then, it's definitely a tight competitive scene too!
