Very interesting announcement from Nintendo today. Looks like this is what they're doing instead of putting their music on streaming services, which is a very Nintendo thing to do. It being a NSO benefit is nice, though, as is the spoiler prevention and curated playlists.
This would explain why every Nintendo has been going hard against music channels on YouTube for a hot minute. On one hand, available is always better than not, but if this isn't the most Nintendo...

Would anybody else really give this away for free? Of course, who wouldn't accept it were it given for nothing, but this is their huge catalogue of much of the most beloved music in some circles of the past four decades being made legitimately available in a bespoke format—I'd never expect for a moment to not pay for something like this from anybody, and I think that almost nobody in Nintendo's position would charge less than that.

Wow, this is fantastic. I can finally legitimately listen to this music without relying on a fan upload of a bootleg (which in the interim were of course much loved). This being bundled into the basic NSO tier is also a steal, as I'd gladly pay far more than that tier's price for this service alone. Plus I like the acknowledgement that this type of music is wholly different from other types in the way the service is designed, with spoiler protection features, thoughtful extended mixes coming from each song having its native loop information associated, and other things too.
You always could have legally listened to them. I would be surprised if there were any Nintendo games published without also publishing a soundtrack. Here is Splatoon, for instance. It was just...

It was just hard to get it because like almost every soundtrack to a Japanese game, it was only released in Japan, so you would have to import it. Nintendo also seemingly doesn’t want any digital storefronts to sell it on the international market at least - probably also domestically but it’s too early in the morning to exercise my Japanese.
That being said I do think that is an unreasonable barrier and would still recommend piracy simply because it’s the only realistic way for most people to actually own the music they want to listen to. As much as I like the looping functionality of this app, it’s not worth it if I can’t listen to the music in the way I want to, with the player of my choice, and on the devices I want to listen with.

sigh I guess that means my hopes of having the Splatoon soundtracks on Spotify are still out of the question.

Can't wait to see more games added to this!
