Just a heads up for any prospective or returning helldivers, the game is very buggy right now, and I don't mean just the Terminids. Big new update means big new errors, so if you can't wait to jump in then expect some crashes, performance issues, and even more in-game physics wackiness than usual. Otherwise, I'll see you in the caves to kill some bugs! Rock and Sto - I mean, for Super Earth!

I’ve been wanting to try Helldivers again but it’s been so long since I’ve played it’s honestly kinda stressful the thought of having to relearn the game and come up to speed on the current meta.

Almost everything is viable. At best you'll see specific weapons being vastly more effective versus some factions and weak against others. But I think it makes sense to not use a flamethrower against a robot and point those at fleshy bugs instead.

If you're on the fence, go play! If anything the underground missions are new for everyone, veterans too.

The best part about this is that there's basically a faction for any playstyle you want. I tend to prefer slower gameplay where I can pick off enemies at a distance, so I mainly fight bots. My brother was always a spray-and-pray guy in Halo, so bugs would suit him much better. Squids (Illuminate) are a mix of both, but since they tend to be in more urban maps in my experience, they don't offer as many options for long engagements like bots do (there are some urban bot areas, but they're less frequent).

I also took breaks for several months before returning, and every time I was able to jump in and find a spot without having to make major adjustments. The biggest changes I've made have been after I picked up a warbond I wanted and unlocked equipment that looked fun (Deadeye and warp pack, specifically). Play how you want, as long as you're not intentionally sabotaging other divers!

For the genre this game is in and how friendly fire is just part of the game, it's one of the more carefree and welcoming multiplayer experiences out there. In my time since launch I've had maybe two or three dives that had someone griefing on purpose. Even something as silly as "console wars" aren't a thing in this game. The Playstation people accept the Xbox players with open arms.
Nobody has ever given me trouble about my loadout, my playstyle, or a teamkill. I can run whatever stratagems I feel like are fun and as long as I'm not outright denying other people their fun it's all hunkydory.

After an 8 month break (I'm on PC), my cousin texted me to ask to party up and show him the way with the recent Xbox release (he's Xbox exclusive). It felt great diving back in. I got ragdolled more than I remember previously just trying to climb over obstacles. But otherwise, it felt good to be back in the chaos. When I left, the terminids and automatons were nearly pushed all the way back. Now, the battle lines are nearly to Super Earth. So lots to do! Dive back in!
