My father in law has stated he was the last payphone repairman in the state (he retired maybe around 10 years ago?), which makes me wonder what the real story is. I've seen payphones in the other areas I've lived in (I haven't lived in CA since the early 2000s), and most are vandalized, but some still do seem operable.
