I adore the Resident Evil series, and I've heard so much about Code Veronica, but I never had the chance to play it. I always hear it's the "true" third entry of the series, and with a better story than Resident Evil 3. This is great news, a lot of people have been clamoring for a remake of that one, and we're actually getting it!

It's a bit messier but effectively RE: Code Veronica was made by a team of people who worked on RE1 and 2 (except for the RE2 director, Kamiya, who was put on the team that was supposed to be making RE3), and so they treated it like it would be RE3 even though it was always supposed to be a spinoff since it was going to be a Dreamcast exclusive. The RE3 we did end up originally getting wasn't even the one from Kamiya's team, it started as a spinoff that was supposed to be a smaller, more focused game which is why RE3 is so short and replayable and action-packed compared to the first two games. So between these two games, neither of which were originally supposed to be RE3, Code Veronica was always regarded as the "true RE3" since it had much more in common with the first two. It's just that because it was intended to be a Dreamcast game it didn't get the name while the one that released for PlayStation got it.
The real project that was originally supposed to be RE3 from Kamiya's team went through many iterations and delays and eventually became.... Devil May Cry.
I'm excited for this. RE: CV was my very first RE game ever as a kid, and I had zero clue what was going on or how to play anything that wasn't a 3D platformer back then so I never got far. I've since played the rest of the series multiple times but it's the only major RE game that never got a re-release to a modern console. A full on remake is a hell of a great surprise.
That's genuinely a fascinating bit of history! I had to do a double take, I can't believe Resident Evil and Devil May Cry are related in any way, lol. Now that you pointed it out, I can see some...

Now that you pointed it out, I can see some of the level inspirations in that Devil May Cry trailer. That gets me actually a bit interested in it, a series I've never had much interested in tbh
You'll only really find the RE level inspirations in the first game, which is pretty rough around the edges these days. Really cool gothic/horror atmosphere though, and I have a soft spot for that...

Really cool gothic/horror atmosphere though, and I have a soft spot for that techno-gothic EDM music it used. The series is a very different style of game than any RE, and one of the best in its genre of high-difficulty fast-paced action games.
