I have always found myself playing games with quick play sessions for the most part. Mario kart, Smash, Old school fighting game, Sports game, or JRPG (where you can save anywhere). Then I just pay in short bursts with the kids or myself and turn it off. But again, i start thinking about things “i should be doing” with my time instead. And concentrate on that.

But, two trends. 1st person shooters give me motion sickness, and Minecraft. I used to try with my kids, 10 years ago. And couldn’t get into Minecraft or fully understand the appeal. Today with my young nephews, i still don’t understand the “point” of the game. But they love it, which is neat.

(This is a double post of mine from another thread).

I’m a newcomer. I’ve been here about a year+, and post in spurts then go dormant for a bit. (This is the backstory).

I actually love this site overall for what it is. I like the community, and the fact that it is small. Truly enjoyable.

I enjoy topics that everyone does not comment on. For example, I notice that some weeks no one comments in the “what you have been watching TV thread”. WHICH IS FINE. We aren’t always watching new things. But I am happy it is there for us to discuss.

The BIGGEST THING IS THIS. I find you all authentic. I would be surprised if anyone was a bot responding. There is no agendas, and everyone who does respond is giving an authentic response. Not a meme, or a one word flippant answer.

IMO, that is the strength of Tildes. I hope it sticks around for a long time.

I personally don’t even want to tell people about the site, as I like it the way it is. But that is counter intuitive. If you want more users, I would consider courting people who look up “social media alternatives”. It is how I found you to begin with.

@deimos You did a wonderful job with this site. This may not have been the intent, but the beauty of the site IMO, is the simplicity and Niche of it all.

During that most recent investor calls, the CEO of Nintendo talked about supporting Switch 1 longer than they planned and the “need” to get games out quicker and cheaper. To me, this means more HD remakes or ports. Nintendo could utilize GameCube/Wii/3DS/Wii U fairly easily and N64 with more work.

This would seem like a quicker option imo of supporting Switch 1 longer.

So I was babysitting my nephew & niece today. 5 & 6 years old for context. I decided to buy the new Yoshi game, as it is difficult to keep a 5-6 year old entertained all day, while doing other things.

So we played it together and I have a few thoughts.

1.) This game is difficult for kids mostly due to the reading comprehension level. The 5-6 year old was not going to read all of that. That portion is a puzzling design choice by Nintendo. I get that Nintendo wants you to read the game to the child, like a story book. But the hints and language is not the language that would be in a young person's book.

2.) Gameplay is very good. It seems like this is mixture of a child and streamlined Gary's Mod, Sonic the Hedgehog 1, and puzzle game. I know this sounds bizarre. Just suspend disbelief for a moment.
A.) The puzzles on some levels will have childish physics that will be a reaction akin to Gary's Mod.
B.) Yoshi in slow motion moves just like how Sonic moves in Sonic 1 on Sega Genesis, when you are exploring. Very similar feel between both of the games.

This game is a unique concept that rewards exploration even if you get hit by enemies. Because you are looking past the enemies and looking at the puzzles. Which imo, is why there is not a life bar.

3.) The game looks and animates very well. Pretty game.

4.) The most PUZZLING thing in this game. The controls. It uses four or five different buttons throughout the gameplay loop. This is not something a child would be able to do. I am surprised it was not a three button game. We completed the first two chapters in under two hours.

5.) The game is easy to beat levels but challenging to beat at 100%. They make you REALLY work for it. Each chapter is less than an hour, if you are not going for 100%.

Final thoughts: This is a very cute game that should not be missed with smaller children. There is enjoyment for the adult as well, trying to help 100% the game. This game is probably $10 too much. I think $49.99/$59.99 would have been a better pricing structure for this game. This game is definitely more fun for $70 than Mario Wonder Bellabel Park edition with young children. I wasn't a big fan of the minigames in the Bellabel Park portion of the game.

Honestly, it terms of "fun factor" this is probably a top 6 Switch 2 first party title (at this time). The creativity trying to solve the more difficult puzzles, is very cozy and yet it is engaging. As always continuing theme, it would appear Nintendo marketing did not convey properly what this game was exactly. Just like Mario Tennis.

Currently a top 6 first party Switch 2 title. (For a few months anyway). Yoshi sits with Mario Kart, DK Bonanza, BoTW, Pokopia, and Mario Tennis.

Maybe, I am wrong and we get another trailer with more gameplay prior to launch. Again, it was just my observation.

Side Note: After seeing some of the analytics that were shared at GDC, I was quite surprised. I think Nintendo, Sony, and gaming as a whole needs to find a way to start pivoting away from the adult games and move towards more kid games. I know that is a large ask. But those statistics regarding children and Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft were staggering.

We will see, but it could be the voice combined with the muppet looking characters. But, i still think as of now, it is that type of game.
Which is fine, again. Little kids would likely love it.

I saw this trailer, and have a different take completely on this game.

This imo, looks like a Sesame Street style game. It appears to me to be a borderline educational game that smaller kids can play with parents.

From what we have seen it there is no combat at all.

If this theory is correct, while not for me, it is an interesting step Nintendo is taking. The educational gaming market is completely underserved and would be an interesting path to go down.

I’ve been playing Mario Tennis Fever with my son.

This reminds me of older EA arcade titles. It has a lot in common mechanically with EA Grand Slam Tennis. It is easy to pick up and play, harder to master.

Swing mode is not quite as responsive as you want it to be. That said, it is even easier to understand than Switch Sports tennis. It is good for young children or elderly.

The single player rpg mode is only about 3 hours long. It is really just a tutorial.

That said the gameplay is magic! The court is smaller than Mario Tennis Aces and it gives it a sense of tension and quick rally’s. Much like how NBA Jam shrinks the court versus NBA 2k.

Honestly, if this game gets a patch to fix online with friends and adds a little more content via free DLC, this is probably a Top 3-4 Switch 2 First party title.

The family friendly pick up and play nature of the matches reminds me more of Mario Kart 8 deluxe than Mario tennis Aces.
